The LFC Reds Greatest Ever Team: Goalkeeper.
      May 23, 2016 06:12:52 pm
I've been thinking about this thread for a while as something to pass the time over the summer.

I was thinking that week by week we can have a discussion on who we all feel have been our greatest players position by position and have a poll at the end of the week to select the player.

After 11 weeks we have the LFC Reds greatest ever side.

Might not get off the ground but l thought I'd have a go anyway.

I was thinking if we stick to 4 2 3 1 as that gets a back four, two CM, wide players, a support striker or '10' and a centre forward.

      So first off Goalkeepers.

P.S. If a kind mod could add a poll that would be great.

Okay mate, we can make this a series for the weeks ahead.

If you PM me the options you'd like up for the poll I'll add them on for you.

      Good idea, by the way.

Clem will probably win but I wasn't old enough to see him live and for me I only think of 2 and that's Brucie and Reina. For a short time I thought Reina was absolutely unbelievable and if he kept that level he'd win it easily in my opinion but he did drop off a touch.

I remember Brucie from my childhood and the 86 cup final save from Sharp sticks in my mind, searched out a vid and there's a good word in there from Kenny. You couldn't argue with his assessment, I've never seen a keeper with the spring that Grobs had. So I'd just shade it to Reina but not much in it for me:

There have been to my mind three or four very good goalkeepers. Clemence was solid over many years and seemed to reserve any f*** ups for when he played for England which was fine by me. Dudek initially was absolutely excellent until the Forlan thing seemingly finished him, while Grobbelaar was always a much better keeper than he was given credit for IMHO. My vote though, for a couple of seasons or so when he was as good as anything else around was Pepe Reina. When he was good, he was really very bloody good indeed.

That said, I don't think goalkeeper is a position where we have excelled over the years. Reina as good as he was wasn't in the Neur/De Gea class of today in my opinion, but he was our best.

Agree that Clem I probably the likely choice for the goalie but like you I grew up with Bruce and he was a fantastic keeper.

Pepe was great for a shorter spell and has less honors to his name than the other two as well.

The Keeper position may be the easiest for us when it comes to a vote but a good place to start.

I have been supporting us since early 90s, and best I've seen is Reina, and he was at his best for 2 seasons only? Can't believe the amount of sh*t we had over the years come to think of it.

Clem for me all day long, if it wasn't for the presence of Shilton he would have been Englands best goalkeeper at the time, second only to Gordon Banks.

      Great idea Si, hats off,

I'm another who was too young to witness Clem although I have seen lots and lots of footage, Brucie is who I seen most live and of course Pepe, very difficult to choose but I have to go with Brucie, he shades it by way of trophies, and he was of course a proper f***in fruitcake, who will ever forget his wobbly legs and his reaction after, still has me pmsl everytime I watch it.

You sure about that Bill? ;)

As I was born in 79 the best I can remember is Pepe followed by Brucie but as you folk are saying in here and from what my Dad says it seems Clem was the one.

EDIT: Nice one Si and also Res.

Also, nice to have something to not argue about... until we get to RB and CM :D

I only remember David James, Brad Friedel Sander Westerveld, Jersy Dudek, Pepe Reina and Simon Mignolet as regulars. From those, Pepe was the best with Dudek coming close second. I love watching video of Bruce Grobbelaar and I think he was the best. I watched very few clips of Roy Clemence.

I wasn't around for Grobbelaar's heyday and can only really say that Reina is the best keeper I have ever seen play for Liverpool in my memory (not much competition from the 90s onwards to be fair!). He was the best signing Rafa ever made and was the basis of a rock solid defence in that season of ours from 10 years ago when we won the FA Cup. Seemed to possess a technical ability that no other keeper seemed to have in the Premier League up until that point. And of course a superb shootout keeper, just the sort you need in the latter stages of a cup competition!

But from what I've read and seen, Clemence strikes me that he really set the standards for the likes of Grobbelaar and Reina later on to reach to...bare hands and all! Seemed like just the sort of character you'd want in the dressing room as well. He's probably the standard bearer.

My memory unfortunately doesn't precede the 21st century, so there's really only 4 regulars for me to choose from. Out of Westerveld, Dudek, Reina & Mignolet, it's obviously Pepe by a landslide personally.

      Great thread btw.

Thinking about it Keepers pre-premier league era probably had it a bit easier, they could pick up a pass back, balls didn't hit the trajectory or speed they do nowadays.

Would be interesting to see the greats at their peak in the modern game and see how they handled it for sure.

Young enough to be my son :)

In 78/79 when you were born, we let in 4 goals at home in the league. Only 12 goals away for a total of 16 goals in a 42 game season with Clem.

Agree with Mick, not a position we've been strong in over years. A poll of worst keepers would probably get a lot more response and possible candidates.

From older footage its no surprise to see so many going for Clem, Elisha Scott also derserves a shout from things I've heard from Kopites of a certain era.

To be fair though my vote has to go from what I've seen in the flesh. That for me means Brucie to the present day.

Quite simply its not close imo, Pepe hands down takes his place between the sticks.

Clemence wins this easily. Why? He didnt need no pansy ass gloves AND he had a lead ball to save as well!

In my lifetime, it's unquestionably Reina.

Best keeper in the world as far as I was concerned for a time period. Three consecutive Golden Glove winners in the League, would of been four if Van Der Sar didn't have that freak season in 08/09 when he kept an insane number of clean sheets on the spin. Even despite that, he only kept one more clean sheet than Pepe that year.

Everything else from 91 (year of my birth) has been average at best. Westerveld probably comes 2nd to Pepe.

Overall though from what I've seen on videos and heard from those who have seen us play a lot longer than I have, nobody comes close to Clemence. Unbelievably good keeper.

Elisha Scott has to get a mention as well. Longest serving player in the club's history, at one point more appearances than any other player (until Billy Liddell overtook him) and considered the most important player in our back to back League championship winning sides of 1922 and 1923.

We've had some F***ing great keepers!

Elisha Scott - now, there's a name I haven't seen for a while. Something of a cult figure in his day.

You are of course correct, Billy - we have a rich history of quality goalkeepers. Tommy Lawrence can be added to the list as well.

      Just read your post mate,...
Yeah I became a Red in '76' I was still in Scotland at the time so only seen us play on TV,
I landed in England about '82' and began going to Anfield from '83',

For the record I think Clem was the best but went for Brucie having seen more of him.

Ray Clemence by a country mile .16 goals conceded in 78-79 season in 42 league games that is insane.
A single moment of brilliance or pure luck would go to Dudek for his double save in Istanbul.

I'm a bit too young (even though I'm not young) to remember Clemence.  At least not at Liverpool.

Probably very difficult to give a true assessment in the days of the backpass and of course having a brilliant set of defenders in front of him (and impassable central midfielders).

Reina was probably our best keeper of the past 20 odd years - not just that, but like Grobbelaar, was probably a fantastic character to have at the club.

In my lifetime it has to be Reina.

While Clemence and others may have been better keepers, watching old clips doesn't give me the same joy and anticipation as watching a game live and not knowing the outcome.

With that in mind my pick is Reina, closely followed by Dudek.

Ray Clemence has to be first but lets not forget the goalie who brought us our first F.A.Cup  Tommy Lawrence. Also I must mention Elisha Scott because my old Dad reckoned he was the best ever.I will add my dad died in the 1960s and never saw Ray Clemence play for us but he did see Tommy Lawrence.

In the premier league era it is obviously Reina but my pick goes to Brucie.
Amazing shot stopper, incredible agility, huge character and an excellent sweeper keeper as well.
If I had a top three it would be:
      1) Bruce
      2) Clemence
      3) Reina.

For those that saw Clemence play will know it's not even close. He wins it by a land slide. He had a huge present in his box and was by far the best of his generation. Not only best Liverpool goalkeeper but also one of the best in the world at his peak.

I cant believe nobody mentions the Brucie bunggate thing. Was that real? did it not happen? if so how can a player who threw a game against the mancs still be revered?

I didn't see enough of Clemence, but he was undoubtably the best, and then Reina - who Rodgers got rid of because of his poor distribition - for Mignolet, by far the worst decision of Rodgers time.

Clemence, Reina (who should still be in goal), Dudek

Grobbelaar was probably most memorable. But Clemence and Pepe were best actual keepers imo.
Agree with Mick, not a position we've been strong in over years. A poll of worst keepers would probably get a lot more response and possible candidates.
Hopefully that's going to change soon though...

From older footage its no surprise to see so many going for Clem, Elisha Scott also derserves a shout from things I've heard from Kopites of a certain era.

To be fair though my vote has to go from what I've seen in the flesh. That for me means Brucie to the present day.

Quite simply its not close imo, Pepe hands down takes his place between the sticks.

makes you wonder what sort of a genius got shut of him he should still be here and we might be in the top4

      Good summer topic Srs,

Clem most probably the most consistent keeper over a long period of time and also shared the England gloves with Shilts.

Brucie is most probably the more dynamic keeper, great shot stopper but always had a mistake in him. World class save in 89/90 season in 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

Jersey, very much in Brucie's mold but will most probably be remembered for one match only.

Pepe a fantastic keeper but lost form very quickly after a brilliant 4 years.

David James most probably had his best days with other clubs.

So Clem just edges Brucie out for me.

Obviously Pepe for me. And not because he's the best of a bad lot in my generation but he was wonderful.

Reflexes, distribution, passion, leadership. Was at the very least a top 3 keeper in the world at his peak. From there it's personal opinion how high he ranked.

Each of them a great servant of this mighty club. More importantly they took us to where we are today. Simply too close to choose.

I remember alot of people complaining about Pepe before he left. I wonder if Mignolet will make this list in 10 years.

Grobbelar is a match fixer as well, no place on that list.

      I vote Bogdan.

You sound like you have no f**king clue as to who these guys are. You probably think Tommy Lawrence is that bloke of Ground Force.

There's surely only one way this result is going for our GKs.

Touchy. Obviously I don't vote Bogdan that would be ridiculous. Lighten up pops.

Some top keepers there at the peak of their powers. Brucie is a firm favourite of mine. I was only a nipper when Clem was our keeper, but I've seen enough to know he was quality. Pepe at his prime was also a brilliant keeper, but the majority of Liverpools glory years coincide with Bruce in-between the sticks, so he's my choice.

Clem was by far the best goalie since WWII (I wasn't alive to see Elisha Scott). He was brave and he made things look easy because of his great anticipation. He also commanded his area like all great keepers do.

He topped the magazine "Total Football's "poll of the best ever goalkeeper, beating the likes of Shilton, Lev Yashin, Gordon Banks and Pat Jennings. Some accolade!
