Young enough to be my son :)

In 78/79 when you were born, we let in 4 goals at home in the league. Only 12 goals away for a total of 16 goals in a 42 game season with Clem.

Was going to go for Mike hooper or Steve Oggy  :f_tongueincheek:but Clemo for me,great shot stopper and always commanded his area with such aplomb & dominance.
Top bloke off the pitch too,his mum used to live in the same road I grew up on & whenever he visited  he always stopped to chat to
Me and me mates as we where always having a kick about in the road & often sorted out match tickets for us
Even when he went to Spurs.

      Love that.

Thinking about it Keepers pre-premier league era probably had it a bit easier, they could pick up a pass back, balls didn't hit the trajectory or speed they do nowadays.

Would be interesting to see the greats at their peak in the modern game and see how they handled it for sure.

Agreed Daz, Brucie with the sweeper keeper style would have done bloody well in my opinion.

Grobbelaar was probably most memorable. But Clemence and Pepe were best actual keepers imo.
Agree with Mick, not a position we've been strong in over years. A poll of worst keepers would probably get a lot more response and possible candidates.
Hopefully that's going to change soon though...

From older footage its no surprise to see so many going for Clem, Elisha Scott also derserves a shout from things I've heard from Kopites of a certain era.

To be fair though my vote has to go from what I've seen in the flesh. That for me means Brucie to the present day.

Quite simply its not close imo, Pepe hands down takes his place between the sticks.

      Good thread Si
Bruce was good , absolutely loved Pepe,s time here , his celebrations , and distribution top drawer , but for me Clem comes out on top, was more consistent for a longer period .

In my lifetime, it's unquestionably Reina.

Best keeper in the world as far as I was concerned for a time period. Three consecutive Golden Glove winners in the League, would of been four if Van Der Sar didn't have that freak season in 08/09 when he kept an insane number of clean sheets on the spin. Even despite that, he only kept one more clean sheet than Pepe that year.

Everything else from 91 (year of my birth) has been average at best. Westerveld probably comes 2nd to Pepe.

Overall though from what I've seen on videos and heard from those who have seen us play a lot longer than I have, nobody comes close to Clemence. Unbelievably good keeper.

Elisha Scott has to get a mention as well. Longest serving player in the club's history, at one point more appearances than any other player (until Billy Liddell overtook him) and considered the most important player in our back to back League championship winning sides of 1922 and 1923.

We've had some F***ing great keepers!

Elisha Scott - now, there's a name I haven't seen for a while. Something of a cult figure in his day.

You are of course correct, Billy - we have a rich history of quality goalkeepers. Tommy Lawrence can be added to the list as well.

You sure about that Bill? ;)

As I was born in 79 the best I can remember is Pepe followed by Brucie but as you folk are saying in here and from what my Dad says it seems Clem was the one.

EDIT: Nice one Si and also Res.

Also, nice to have something to not argue about... until we get to RB and CM :D

      Just read your post mate,...
Yeah I became a Red in '76' I was still in Scotland at the time so only seen us play on TV,
I landed in England about '82' and began going to Anfield from '83',

For the record I think Clem was the best but went for Brucie having seen more of him.

Feel wrong picking someone I've never seen play because I can't really judge, so for me it has to be Pepe Reina.

Ray Clemence by a country mile .16 goals conceded in 78-79 season in 42 league games that is insane.
A single moment of brilliance or pure luck would go to Dudek for his double save in Istanbul.
