Almost there... The LFC Reds Greatest Ever Team: Forwards
      Jul 08, 2016 01:34:00 pm
And so we come to our final category in this summer's trip down memory lane - the forwards, the strikers, the goalscorers.

Let's have the nominations for players worthy of going forward for a forum vote.

      So.....

      F**k

      Right it's gonna be

      F**k....

In all seriousness though I don't actually find it that difficult in terms of who I instinctivly go for, personally would have to go

      Fowler
      Rush

Robbie was probably the most natural finisher I've seen, broke into the side when I was 15/16 so lived through my teens and early 20s idolising him, Rush as a kid I just loved him, he had everything, best at closing from the front and had any type of goal in him

However none withstanding the obvious shouts for
      Dalglish
      Beardsley
      Aldridge
      Keegan
      Toshack
      Torres
      Suarez
      Owen

It really hurts to leave out Dalglish and Beardsley personally but I started supporting the club in 86 so really remember Kenny more as manager than player even though I have read and watched everything back since and Beardsley was a personal favourite as a kid. But for eras and two I absolutely loved it would be Rushy and God if I had to pick

Obviously there are so many reasons to vote so many players. I grew up with Fowler  and Owen on my bedroom wall as a kid but I have to vote for the two that have given me the most joy in my 27 years and that is Torres and Suarez.

Torres edges it for me, I F***ing loved him! Broke my heart when he went to Chelsea. Thankfully he never delivered.

Like a girlfriend that dumps you and you see her a year later and she's pregnant and doubled in size. But anyway...

      Torres and Suarez  :gt-happyup:

Has to be Suarez in there. Probably the most skilful player to have ever played for the club. Best player in the world the past three years. Made us forget Torres very very quickly and was a level well above the standards of Fernando.

We have a deep deep history of top class forwards - this will be hard for anyone who knows that history.

Edit: As we are going 4-4-2 - I will look for a partnership and that should help me narrow it down.

Roger Hunt & Ian St John; Kevin Keegan & John Toshack; John Aldridge & Peter Beardsley; Luis Suarez & Daniel Sturridge or Ian Rush & King Kenny. Hmm...  ;)

We've had a lot of good forwards in my time. With some of them it all turned a little sour.

Idolised Owen growing up, respected Fowler greatly.

Fast forward a decade it was Torres and once he'd dumped us it was Luis and Studge.

In my life time the best two were easily Torres and Suarez.

Them two playing together in their prime would have beaten anyone in Europe.

To be honest you may be on to something there, the way you have put that

Think I'm going to have to break my rule of only voting for players I've watched in my time to stick Kenny in, like I said I remember him as a manager rather than a player but I've watched so much of him recorded and back that I feel like it was there anyway

Just who to drop... Robbie or Rushy

Yet another headache from this fantastic thread, we can go back decades with our club and each has produced top drawer strikers/forwards, St John, Hunt, Toshack, Keegan, Rush, Kenny, Owen,God, Torres and Crazy genius Suarez,

In my team I've tried to select those who I've seen live or have known or learnt more about, and it's the same with my forwards although I have seen these two play on many a occasion,  for that reason I have to go with Kenny & Rushy,  their telepathy was second to none, Rush with his deadly eye for where the goals were and Kenny for his intelligence, his touch, his skill, his passing his scoring, he had everything, simply awesome, so those two ably backed tho with,
      Fowler
      Torres
      Suarez in any combination,

                              Clemence
             Neal.  Hansen  Hyppia.  Nicol
       Callaghan Souness Gerrard Barnes
                        Dalglish.  Rush

Subs; Reina, Emlyn, Lawler, Beardsley, Alonso, Mascherano, R Kennedy, Fowler, Suarez Torres, Dundee

Suarez > Torres.  Suarez carried Liverpool almost single handedly at times, playing alongside worse players.  Torres had the ball being fed to him from Gerrard in his prime, Alonso, Kuyt, Mascherano et al.

The one I feel sorry for is Keegan. People forget just how important (and good) a player he was. The Suarez of his day tends to get overlooked in part because of who replaced him (Kenny). What people tend to forget is that Keegan wasn't replaced solely by Dalglish but Souness came in and shortly after Hansen came in too.

For me Dalglish was better but only by the thickness of a cigarette paper.

Guys I got to be honest, I've royaly fu**ed this up, I've been looking back at my choices for each element, for instance I choose Bruce rather than Clem,Nicol as RB, Barney LB,Hyppia instead of Carra,so my re-jigged team is

                             Grobbelaar
         Nicol   Hansen  Carragher Kennedy
         Callaghan Souness Gerrard Barnes
                      Dalglish     Rush

StJohn, Keegan and Torres while not the best, were players I have loved...

Although I suspect kenny and rush will walk this, I never saw them play.

This one is relatively easy for me.

Fowler was my boyhood hero. He still is my hero to this day. I still haven't seen a 'natural finisher' quite like him. Growing up he was on the back of all my shirts I just wanted to be him.

My other choice is Suarez. He is the most talented player I've ever seen in a red shirt. He was truly unbelievable.

Michael Owen shouldn't be on that list take the little judas Manc c**t off.

I have seen all the players on the vote list play.
Its been a privilege and wonderful experience.

So its really difficult for me to choose over a number of decades and different team personnel.

St John and Hunt  ?  /   Keegan and Toshack  ?

      No.

In LFC history there has been no one who made me look on in awe more than Luis Suarez.
The goals he scored from every angle were amazing.
      Our short lived Crazy Diamond.

A special mention has to be made for God.
In our hearts as a local lad there was the extra thrill when the ball went in the net.

Rushie has a special mention .
Owen was a traitor and unfortunately that is the legacy he leaves as a result.
      Can never be changed.

      However .
My second vote goes to the King.  His positional play ... shielding of the ball was beyond comparison.
All round fantastic player  so with a drum roll its ...

      Luis and Kenny.

This is an horrific choice to make, this was always going to be the hardest pick for me seeing as our forwards really were heaven sent & each and everyone in the poll really where something special.
My first choice is my boyhood hero Kenny dalglish  absolutely Idolised him growing up & I even swapped my Patrick Kevin keegan footy boots for a pair of puma dalglish silver  ( I cherished them boots ;D ) my second choice Has to be Rushie  him and Kenny where key
To our success when we ruled the first division & Europe.
The very close runners up based on players I seen live 3rd Suarez,4th fowler ,5th Keegan 6th Nando 7aldo
      8,Owen 9,Beardsley.

F**k it. It was Dalglish and Rush if I went with my very younger days. Would've felt wrong doing one without the other.

So, I decide to go with what and who I remember seeing the most when a bit older.

      Fowler and Luis.

      Really difficult this one.

Robbie was my favourite player during his first spell with us and Rushie is as good a goal scorer as you'll ever see.

But Luis is the most gifted footballer I've seen play for us and as someone else said on here you cannot have a greatest ever LFC side without the King on it so my choice is those two.

      Suarez and Dalglish.

Suarez is simply the best footballer I've ever seen in a red shirt, he has to go in there and I think in any team we have ever had, he was that good.

Next to him is a straight shootout between 2 number 9's, Fowler and Torres and Robbie walks it for me, so good I even named my goldfish after him as a kid!

Fowler and Suarez, what a combination.

      Where do you start!

First and foremost we've been truly blessed with talent up top throughout our clubs history.

Kenny was player manager when I started supporting the reds so as much as it grates me ala Souness from my own personally viewpoint I've got to leave the King out. I would love to be able to sit here and include the likes of Stubbins, Hunt, St John, Keegan etc against the more modern day counterparts but imo it would be unfair to do so.

Ian Rush what a player to start with, I would tell any young lad who wants to aspire to be at the very top of his profession to watch Rushie movement and work ethic. The wisdom he passed on to Fowler as Robbie was breaking into the side was a huge. Rushie was the man for the big occasion, think I'm right in saying it wasn't until the '87 league cup final loss that we'd lost a game when he scored the first goal!!!

John Aldridge what a finisher he was, he was prolific at whatever level he was playing in. He lived the dream as a red supporter himself and I will always hold him in very high regard.

Peter Beardsley any goalscorer would have loved Beardo as a partner (the proofs there with Aldo, Lineker, Cole), I don't think I've every seen such a unselfish forward in my time watching Liverpool. Would have loved him to stay longer but it wasn't to be.

Robbie Fowler, for anyone that was around when God broke into the team it was something very special. The amount and arrays of goals he scored puts him right up there. Don't mind saying I shed a tear when I turned the PC on to see he'd resigned.

Michael Owen he falls into the McManaman mould due to manner of his departure. But let me tell you this lad was frightening, he was fearless the way he ripped experienced defenders to shreds with his pace was breathtaking at times. Lets not forget he won the Balon D'Or with us not many players can say that!

Fernando Torres, I idolised the bloke my 8 year old daughters bear she got from build a bear at the age of 1, is still to this day called Teddy Torres ;D. I tried to get her to change it but she was having none of it, from the moment he torn the Chelsea defence a new one I thought this is a striker to be feared. His partnership with Stevie was feared right across Europe I just wish his stay didn't end how it did. Even before the transfer to them, he was sulking on the pitch it's the only way to describe it. I sat in the Kop his last game and it was hard too watch I must admit.

Luis Suarez. Unbelievable, more than anything the blokes desire to give every ounce he can and then a bit more. A talent I wish we still had but one imo that's impossible to replicate. A true one off genius.

Gutted to leave so much talent out but it's got to be done. Rushie and Suarez for me.

In recent times it has to be Suarez and Dalglish but I well recall a fantastic centre forward from the 1940s and 1950s.He was Albert Stubbins and if my memory is correct he had one hell of a shot and once broke a crossbar when he hit the ball so hard.He knew how to put the ball into he net as well.
Roger Hunt and the StJohn fully deserve to be up there with the best.

This is the exact problem I had with the formation chosen!!!
Why are the rules of football such that we can't field more than 11 players!?!
      Ridiculous.
      So hard this one
To select one legend over another?!
If I was going on my childhood heroes it is dalglish and rush
In teen years it's fowler and Beardsley
      Recent years Suarez and Torres.
      This is brutal!
I need to have a think.

Been thinking about this one all day at work, and so have decided, one from the past and one the present.

We have really been blessed with some truly wonderful players.

However, Dalglish is an absolute must. From player, to manager, to ambassador, he has represented this club in all manners of ways and makes us proud he is ours. The trials he has faced off the pitch, as well as his empathy, his wit and his overall professional approach to any situation, shows just what a class act he is.

His partner would have to be someone we all adore, without reservation, and someone who Kenny himself picked out, Robbie Fowler.

These two are my picks, but it was very hard! There are many others we have had who I adore but these two stand out above all others due to the loyalty they had/have for the club.

It has to be....dalglish and rush.

In my era, Suarez, Torres, Fowler, Owen in this order. But I voted for Dalglish and Suarez because I saw many videos of King Kenny and he was brilliant.

Suarez > Torres.  Suarez carried Liverpool almost single handedly at times, playing alongside worse players.  Torres had the ball being fed to him from Gerrard in his prime, Alonso, Kuyt, Mascherano et al.

Surprised so many talk about Torres and Suarez in the same breath as though they were equals. If we had Suarez in his prime in 2007-2009 like Torres then we would have won the Premier League and probably the Champions League as well.

By rights this should be Dalglish and Rush. Quite simply a breath taking partnership. Look at Rushies record, unreal.

But I idolised and I can't overstate that enough Robbie Fowler. I was 14/15 when he arrived and he had me from day 1. What a finisher. Best I've ever seen and I mean that. Lethal. Volleys headers tap ins screamers right foot left foot the lot.

On that basis I have to pick Robbie. God and the King up front....drooling

Went for Kenny and Rush their record speaks for itself as do the trophys it's no coincidence that our greatest era came with these two leading the charge , a lot have gone for Luis and I understand why magical player no doubt who I loved watching play so I have him on the bench , I feel the team I selected would have battered most if not all before them

Don't think Torres is a contender here really but I got to say I absolutely loved watching him at his peak with Gerrard just behind him. Not as good as Suarez no way but in terms of enjoyment it was right up there IMO.

Kenny's got to be in there and then after that it's between Fowler (absolutely loved the man), Rush (stats and trophies speak for themselves) and Suarez (probably the most gifted player to put on a red shirt) for me.

      Dalglish and Suarez. Just.

Had Suarez not left, he could've went on to be the greatest ever, but the greatest ever team so also include loyalty, So for me it will be Rush, the player I watched from my primary school days, the best poacher weve ever had. Second choice has to be God, the best all-around forward ive had the pleasure to watch.

Part of the problem with these Greatest ever threads  is they are generally related to the posters age.I am sure if my Dad was still alive he would come up with a totally different 11 players to me.For instance he used to go on about Gordon Hodgson who scored 232 goals in 359 matches.I could be wrong but I dont think I have seen Gordon Hodgsons name mentioned.

For me Suarez had to be one of the strikers but how do you leave out Rush but I had to put Kenny in there.

We sure have had some fine players over the years.

When will the results go up, can we see the total percentage of each player please?

...  but Shanks started it and laid down the foundation of the legacy we have today.

But Paisley bettered it and took us to another level.!

Are we going to finish this with a choice of Manager?

I had a PM suggesting that so yeah. May as well!

I was sitting in a very nice Tapas restaurant just off 'Las Ramblas' (Los Toreros - if anybody looking for good food at a decent price) in Barcelona last night........

My wife says "you ok, you look worried?"

I say "I think I might have got this all wrong..."

She says "What, the food?; Life?; us? What the F**k - do we have to do this in front of the kids?"

I say "shut up, no. I thought about Kenny & Rushie; Luis & Kenny; Luis & Fernando.........but I never considered Kenny & Fernando and now I can't stop thinking about it........"

Her "eat your f***in squid ya bellend and drink up or I'm gonna finish this bottle myself.......!"

We have been blessed over the years in this area. For me it's Rush and Dalglish. It has to be them.

It's a shame I had to leave Fowler, Suarez and Torres out but you can't have 5 forwards in a team.
