Liverpool have drawn Burton Albion away in the competition.

Can we go all the way to the final again in this competition and have another Wembley trip?

Bit of an afterthought cup this season with our main focus being the title, but I think we can use it both to give our squad players and youngsters a few games and as a fallback trophy if our title challenge goes tits up early doors.

As usual a mixture of squad players and youngsters in the early rounds and then bring in the first teamers once things get more serious for the semi's and final.

Hopefully a few more youngsters will seize the opportunity to show us what they are capable of and push for a squad place.

i kinda love the early season cup game. when is this, after match day 4 or something? it gives those players that have come off the bench a couple times before then the chance to finally start a game. if we're doing well it's even harder to break in so this would be at a welome time. plus of course we get to rest the players that are the core of the prem side so far.

maybe karius will make his debut here? possibly too early. unless matip pushes his way in before then it could be his first start too.

Ideal match to give the fringe players a runout but treat the match with caution.

Depending on the draw and the stage of the draw, I say play the reserves early on and the further we progress the more we strength the line-up.

After match day 2, the week of Aug. 22.  He freshened the team, sometimes changing the lot, for midweek games much of the time last season. Even with trimming the squad quite a bit in the off season, this is going to be the best chance to give a number of players a game in the early part of the season. As far as kids go, Woodburn, Ejaria (if fit) and Alexander-Arnold) are likely the leading contenders to make the team or bench for this game.

I also wonder if this might be about when Sturridge, Milner and Grujic are ready to compete again.

      Bring them on. YNWA

Should merge this thread below from the General Football Forum into one

The third round draw in full:

      Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal

      Leeds United vs Blackburn Rovers

      Queens Park Rangers vs Sunderland

West Ham United vs Accrington Stanley

      Southampton vs Crystal Palace

      Swansea City vs Manchester City

      Fulham vs Bristol City

      Bournemouth vs Preston North End

      Tottenham Hotspur vs Gillingham

      Everton vs Norwich City

      Derby County vs Liverpool

      Northampton vs Manchester United

      Brighton vs Reading

      Newcastle United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

      Stoke City vs Hull City

      Leicester City vs Chelsea

With the exception of Leicester vs Chelsea they all seem fairly one sided ties, obviously these games are always capable of throwing up surprise results. Wouldn't mind the mancs going down to "Formidable" Northampton!

A chance to progress further in this competition, surely must see off Derby. The 2 domestic cup competitions all the more important. As the Reds are not involved in Europe this season.

This competition is our best chance of silverware this season, we have to take it seriously an dit looks like we are plus a very nice draw. Bloody annoying seeing Burnley beaten by Accrington though, ah well, water under the bridge, onwards and upwards etc.
