Is it time to consider the issuing of three yellow cards for red card?

Cards were introduced for offences 50+ years ago. At the time, it was rare enough to be booked, and only the most serious fouls saw a straight red.

Nowadays, the same rules apply, but the amount of things players can be disciplined for has risen dramatically. So referees now often let fouls go unpunished, and they are often reluctant to issue a second yellow if a player is already booked. A yellow card is a caution, but what is the point of a second caution when it's an automatic red card anyway?

So should there be a change in the laws to reflect the increase in bookable offences over the years?

I thought this was a thread about Christmas cards. I got 23 this year. About football...I think 2 cards is enough. They could have Orange card as an alternative to yellow for bad challenges that don't quite deserve red, but comes with a 10 minute sinbin. So it would be Orange, then a red. The problem with Yellow, then Orange then red would be giving players too much freedom for tactical fouls and we would find it even harder to break teams down who park the bus, so no thanks on a 3 card system.

What makes you think referees wouldn't bottle giving 3 yellows like they currently do with 2? All it'll mean is players can foul and god knows what else even more. I'm definitely against this idea.

No it doesn't. It means that if a player on a yellow card commits another offence, the ref can book him again as a final warning, rather than letting it go unpunished because he's already booked him earlier for something else.

Last week, a player was booked for kicking the ball away. Minutes later, he got stuck into Hendo and got nothing for it. Which is the more serious offence?

You've basically just explained a situation whereby the punishment is the same, the player still didn't get sent off. Why do they need a second yellow as another warning when a talking to is basically the same?
