Sunderland v Liverpool 3pm Mon 2nd Jan 2017 Pre Match Thread
      Jan 01, 2017 12:07:02 am
No resting on our laurels at this time of the season, the games are coming thick and fast and no sooner have we recovered from celebrating a win and the New Year we're preparing for another one.

This time we're up against Gollum's Sunderland and his injury ravaged squad will be wishing they didn't have to face us so soon after being pasted all over Turf Moor.

I'm not expecting many changes despite having less than 48 hours between games as we've a pretty easy home tie in the FA Cup at the weekend where plenty of changes can be made.

For once we play before Chelsea so a good win will put pressure on them to get a result.

Gotta turn the screw on Golum now.
I've only got 1 perfect in the prediction league, so I'm expecting No 2 on Monday, with my 0:4 shout!

Had a couple of 1:0 now, think we need to up the goal difference😊

Sturridge to get a run out? Didn't get a go at all earlier. Or will we go with Origi who warmed the bench?

Personally, I think we need to give Daniel a chance, think he deserves it.

Will be interesting to see which team Klopp puts out, I imagine quite a few will be rested but even our B team have enough to beat Gollum's boys.

Firmino has not really deserved a start ahead of Sturridge irrespective of his pressing because Firmino's sloppy passing could have cost us severely in the the last couple of games.

His passing led to our goal, though.

Can't understand how someone who has created the most (or one of the most) amounts of chances in the league is all of a sudden "not deserving of a start" ahead of someone who has barely played and arguably has another striker ahead of him in the pecking order besides Bob.

Bobby (regardless of my opinion of his drink-driving) is going nowhere. Danny is a superb player but half of his strengths are not present at the moment (pace and mobility) so to suggest he comes in for someone that Jürgen has built our attack around is a bit crazy.

I understand everyone is eager for Danny to come back and be a hit but the lad has hardly played for months (seasons, even). I'd be majorly surprised if he started more than 4 games in succession from now until the the end of the season without injury to anyone else.

Unsure on Hendo starting, with Kelly reporting in the ECHO that he is a doubt. Milner and Clyne did a lotta running as well. Can, Lallana, Gini and Bobby completed 90 mins. Another game inside 40 hours is absolutely mental.

      Mignolet
      TAA Lovren Klavan Moreno
      Gini Can Ejaria
      Mane Studge Origi

Subs- Karius, Clyne, Lucas, Milner, Ejaria, Firmino, Lallana

Think I'd start with Lallana and put Origi on the bench. It gives us a bit more lateral movement to pull the opposition around. Better than just running down the channels,

Unless there are major concerns from the fitness guys about any of yesterdays starting 11 I don't think the team will change that much.

Studge may come in to give his legs a stretch as he'll probably start the FA Cup game next Sunday and they've barely got any defenders left standing.

Hendo probably won't be risked, let him have a bit of a rest before the Saints game but other than that I don't think much else will change.

I'm thinking more in terms of this game. A 44 hour turnaround. I reckon one of Firmino and Hendo could miss this 1.

Origi got half an hour and Sturridge got nothing. With that in mind, time to use the squad? And if so which option?

I agree with his contribution, but also agree with the occasional (too often lately) liability.
Think it might be a good idea to rest him and let him freshen up to return with Couts fit.
We should have enough with Studge starting, for Golums lot.
Fully charged they're crap, and they got four regulars out injured.
Think we'll turn them over big time if we don't overdo the changes.
Hendo likely to be out as well.

A front three of Sturridge, Origi & Ejaria/Ojo; a midfield three of Stewart, Lucas & Can should do. 2-0. One in each half.

Milner/Clyne... Deserves rest too... Hopefully get them off after an hour of play.

I can see Klopp putting up similar line-up to Citeh since he will be able to sit most of them for the FA Cup match on the 8th. Henderson injury keeps him out can see Can CDM, Lallana in CM and either Origi/Sturridge up in attack. There is a bit of flexibility with the line-up if he wants to get cute to rest players or give bench player playing time but I think he will go back to his main players to get the points and play the bench/reserve players for FA Cup and even 1st league of League Cup

Is Mane available for this one? If so Klopp will get a full 90 out of him before he goes off with Senegal.

Also, anybody know why we are playing tomorrow and not the day after? Could understand it if we were moved forwards to be on the tele tomorrow but doesn't look like we are.

I can see a similar beating to the one we gave Middlesborough a few weeks ago..

Our front three will get a lot more space in-between the lines than what they did against Man City..

Don't care who plays where as the whole squad is digitally programmed to win.

No let up in our destruction of teams week after week under Jürgen.

Unfortunately not mate, he's a Wednesday fan.  His fiance hates footy/sport although if she had to support anyone it'd be Liverpool as her family do but for them to travel all that way to visit the last thing she'll want to do is watch footy.

The game isn't on tv here anyway, if it was I'd at least have it on but I can't disappear into the laptop to follow on a stream.

I'm glass half full and was expecting us to get just 6 points from 9 points over Christmas so, even though it's Sunderland, anything better than a defeat I'm going to take!

Weirdly I think it's possible both us and Chelsea may get a shock result in the next game.  Hope I'm half wrong.

He's still in the job because this is as good as the team is going to get. In 3 of the past 4 seasons they've managed to scrape staying up by 2 or 3 points and no matter who you have in charge, eventually it's going to catch up to you when you keep buying sh*t.

      Kaboul - 3m
      Borini - 8m
Kone - 6m (aside from the end of last season he's been sh*te)
      Rodwell - 10m
      Buckley - 2.5m
      Altidore - 6.5m
      Giaccherini - 6.5m
      Bridcutt 2.5m
      Fletcher - 12m
      A. Johnson - 10m
      Graham - 5m

That list makes for sickening reading. Imagine that being a big part of your transfer business for the past 3-4 years!

       :-[
Good luck with that one... :D

I'll live mate, I'm recording the game so I can watch it Tuesday in peace and we'll have soccer special on so we can all follow our teams (hubby supports Barnsley) but it'll be noisy as I've got the 2 granddaughters visiting too  :D

This are the game that we need to concentrate, not getting complacent and struggle to win.  No game is easy in EPL. We need this 3 points.

coyd, win dirty, win by all means and get us the 3 points

Let's put the City game behind us, lets remain focus. As someone said earlier no game is easy in the 2nd half of the season. I'm sure the 2nd half of the season is going to be tougher and we will see that teams at the bottom half will shift up a gear or two and harder to beat apart from those title contenders. Hence, lets not underestimate Sunderland, we may have a superior squad on paper and they have a number of injuries and if we allow complacency to creep in then everything will be neutralised.

I'd say, fully focus on this game, don't allow complacency to set in, play to our strengths and exploit their weaknesses and get a few more goals to close the gap on Chelsea.

A winnable game but lets remain cautious.

I would be very wary of triple buses by Moyes. Also it is our third game in 8 days. There will be tired legs and we may not be able to our normal game.

I willing take 1-0 right now.

Absolutely vital we get three points today I would go for minimal changes unless the players are genuinely tired or carrying knocks.

Get the game won then make changes no need for experiments that are mentioned on here.

Yes but on the plus side Sunderland will also be knackered they only had about 5 hours more rest than our lads plus they have a seriously depleted squad of players so not so much room for juggling as we have. We really should be winning this game but I am a bit nervous about it and early goal would be so important.

Yep totally agree about complacency, these are f**king awful
though, there is no two ways about it,they have let in nearly the same amount of goals as we have scored so far this season but none the less a professional aproace is needed, get stuck in and play our own game and not let them bring us down to there level, let's do the double on them & bag the first 3 points of 2017

Sunderland manager "The Chosen One" describes his side's performance in their 4-1 home defeat to Burnley as "dire" and "as bad as anything" he's been involved.

      Whats worse ?

A manager slagging of his team saying its the worst performance he has ever seen

      or

A poor deluded fool saying what character we had even though we played crap due to lack of tactics and a game plan  aka T.P.M. ?

      Take your pick .

I'm all for Sturridge and Origi coming in but I'm not sure about TAA, Lucas and Stewart coming in to the team.

Sunderland will be hungry and we can't afford to lose and playing those three to me will weaken our chances greatly.
