Liverpool have withdrawn Joel Matip from selection for their Premier League clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford after failing to get clearance from FIFA.

The Reds defender, who was hoping to make his comeback following an ankle injury, has found himself embroiled in a club v country row after turning down the opportunity to represent Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Cameroon Football Federation threatened “to take action” and ensure that Matip wouldn't be able to play for Liverpool for the duration of the tournament in Gabon, which got under way yesterday.

It has more to do with what they offer overall...Lallana can play wide right and deliver, balls into dangerous areas as can he dribble into the box....While Can would be only asked to operator slight more forward than he normal does... Between Stewart, Can and Henderson that would give us more stability and control in the middle of the park

Instead of it 'becoming a story' at 2:30pm on Sunday then LFC should have made a statement on their website earlier this week about seeking clarification, or Klopp could have mentioned it in his press conference.  Might have piqued their interest to give us an answer?
