Shakes are for both recovery and muscle building mate.

Avoid severe DOMS and enable you to train again quicker.

My advice is USN Pure Protein.  A lot cheaper than Maxi and if memory serves 200 calories, 40g protein, 2g carbs.

Thanks mate....ill take a look at it.

Anyone ever use protein drinks before / after workouts?

I'm not looking for muscle build at all just some something to help me recover a bit.

      Any ideas or suggestions?

      Thanks

Be careful what protein shakes you consume.

      http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-11371/why-you-really-shouldnt-use-protein-powders.html

I use hemp based protein, which you can get in the likes of Holland and Barrett.

I use Maximuscle progain, i am trying to bulk up.

If you are using protein shakes to just to help your muscles recover get an shake which is whey isolated, so something like gold standard whey.

Myprotein.com are their own distributors so they are significantly cheaper than these commercialised brands such as maxi muscle and CNP.

      Whey protein is whey protein

Not been to the gym in months, need to get some motivation back!

Took me so many posts to scroll through so I could quote you in the relevant thread, ironic what the post says aha.

So I woke up from me nap had 2 bananas and made my way to the gym. Skipped a warm up on the treadmill didn't have 15 mins to waste,  just did a warm up set on my first exercise.

Well firstly I wasn't seeing any difference, strength was looking good but after about 3/4 sets of my first 3 exercises I wasn't pushing what I was normally do had to go a little lighter.

I worked back and triceps by the time I got to my triceps I was aching, all throughout the tricep workout they ached straight away.

All in all wasn't the best work out but at least I got it done and didn't fall behind on my gym schedule which is orientated around work. I reckon if I had more time to eat before the sesh id have been fine.

Now for a protein shake and a tuna jacket potato.

Ha I did actually get back into it after then, don't think I have gone more than a couple of weeks without going since then other than when I broke my hand last year.

You haven't convinced me that I would find it worthwhile after a nap. Now have a nap and eat longer before and then we shall see ;).

Trying to get back on track with my triathalon training....swam 440 yards this morning, then rode 10 miles on the bike, ran 1.5, went to the gym at lunch and lifted weights and playing basketball this evening likely.

Gotta lose a few pounds before the race in Sept.

Ahah, honestly though I am happy I went because with my schedule I would have missed working my back and triceps for a week and we can't have that can we.

Always wanted to do a triathlon, but my cardio is not very good right now. A triathlon and a marathon are on my bucket list, but it will take time for me to get on that level.

I am right now a dedicated lifter. I have been going for about 2 and a half years to the gym. I have currently cut down to a 8% body fat. Going to bulk up again in a month or so.

And for those of you who don't like supplements, well, you would not want to look in my cabinet :D

Hitting the chest tomorrow, got to go without a training partner for the first time in ages when training chest. So was wondering for the lifters out there, as i don't have a spot for the bench press with the bar, i am going to have to try compensate.

Would it be better to use the smith machine or complete a flat bench press with dumbbells instead or try both, on top of the incline dumbbell press i will do and other machine based exercises?

I use smith machine exclusively unless they are taken. I just like the stability for an old geezer like me with bad shoulders.

Hmm i think i might use the smith machine for a flat chest press but just to make sure i work my chest just as hard as usual add the dumbbell flat bench press too as well as incline, then hit the machines.

Okay so this is for the lifters out there in the forum.

Recently due to my friends becoming lazy or what not i have had to hit the gym by myself and in doing so have had to change my routine when working on chest. I have now gone from using the bar to using dumbbells for flat bench press and i can honestly say i feel it a lot more in my chest then i did with the bar. Maybe it was because i was being given too much help when using the bar in an spot but when using the dumbbells i feel a real good stretch and strain in my chest.

So my question is to those who lift, do you prefer using the bar, dumbbells or both for chest day, ideally i would use both but atm am more than content with dumbbells amongst other exercises.

Mix it up. Everyone has their own preference, to what they use. Everybody is different too so not everyone will have the same results and get on better with one than the other. From what I take notice off is that quite a few people prefer DB but again it's just what you feel best with and what you get the best results from. It's not really something you can base on what others do because like I say, nobody will all have the same results from doing certain things like.

Doing my first triathlon this weekend (Sunday). It's a Sprint distance so just a 1/4 mile swim, 10 mile bike and 3.1m run.

Been training pretty regularly, my weight isn't where I wanted it to be. I'm up around 195 or so which is about 20lbs heavier than my lightest weight.

I would be ecstatic to finish it in 1:15 but I'm probably looking more like 1:20 realistically if everything goes well. Can't wait though, should be a lot of fun.

Well, I finished, not sure of my official time yet as they haven't posted results but I probably didn't hit my goal of 1:15. The swim was brutal, not used to swimming in a crowd and the surf was fairly stiff. It was hard to find any kind of rhythm and my swim time was about 4 minutes more than I expected. I did well in transition and the bike stage. The run stage was about 3 minutes slower than I planned so I was a little disappointed in that. I will definitely do another at some point. It was a good time.

Found out my official time was 1:19 so I was very happy with that considering how slow my swim and run were. I am actually quite pleased with that time and hope to get closer to 1:10 next year.

Dang man, that's smoking fast. I could only ever dream of running that fast. My oldest son, now that's a different story. He whipped my butt on Thanksgiving day, we ran a 5k race. Beat me by about 5 minutes :(

I'm with you on the marathon thing, I've always wanted to do one but never wanted to train for one if that makes sense.
