I've already thrown out a £3.50 pack of mince this week (well the missus did).  I'm not throwing out a £1 something garlic bread pack when it's 'probably' safe to eat.

I guess your right and there is a credit crunch on atm, how much does garlic bread cost from the local pizza town/express/dominoes etc?

      About £2.30?

I've got a good one for tomorrow's lunch, but I'll need to take a snap of it when I wake up.

      If I wake up. ;)

That advice is approximately half an hour too late on the trifle.

I can't believe I'm being serious about garlic bread after 1am.

The use by date thing is a manufacturers warning - one or two days afterwards should be ok and it will be edible if it's been stored properly (even more so if you're pissed). But things containing dairy products or fresh meats, I'd avoid.

Sell by date is just a thing so retailers can't have come backs. In other words, to be sold for a profit, it has to be the best quality.

I work in food retail my rule of thumb is if it can be shoved in the freezer do so  the other day I was rearranging my freezer  trying to find some mince beef for spag bol only to find the resident fridge hoover (aka my other 1/2) had used it in his chilli but I did find some mince lamb, used by date 2month ago, thawed it out & cooked it ,eat it,
      STILL HERE!!

Sell by - This is the date imposed upon retailers, anything with this has to be sold by the date indicated. Anything past this date is still fine, but not maximum quality.

Best before - Similar to the above, but retailers may sell these as reduced prices. Past this date is still usable for days/weeks depending on the product.

Use by - A date for both retailers and consumers. Must be used by this date, and is so important that any retailer with any of these found past the date on their shelves get fined £5000 per item.
