      Fernando Cavenaghi (Bordeaux)
      Oct 15, 2008 03:12:16 pm
Liverpool are reportedly ready to make an offer for Argentine International striker Fernando Cavenaghi from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux when the transfer window opens in January, according to reports in France.

French side Bordeaux have moved to reject the speculation that there is interest in their 25-year-old forward, who has been in superb form for the French side this season and last in the French top-flight, but sources close to Bordeaux reportedly concede that they will lose Cavenaghi in January to a top European club.

However, Cavenaghi come across a stern test against English powerhouse Chelsea when the French Ligue 1 club hosts the Blues in their Champions League group clash, and if he impresses in this game, the speculation of a New Year move to Anfield can only intensify.

In the first leg, Cavenaghi was used only for the last 34 minutes of the 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, and if he starts at home on November 26, the No 9 could firmly get himself in the reckoning for a transfer to Europe’s elite.

Cavenaghi joined Bordeaux from Russian side Spartak Moscow in January 2007 and scored 22 goals in 35 appearances for Bordeaux last season. Including a run of 10 goals in 9 matches, which gained the former River Plate striker a call-up to the Argentine national team.

Reds manager Rafa Benitez is understood to want Cavenaghi to replace Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt at Anfield, with Kuyt a target for Bundesliga side SV Hamburg, who are coached by former Tottenham Hotspur boss Martin Jol.

The Merseyside club are believed to be the only side to have made enquiries about the Argentine, with the striker valued in the region of £12million, which would be part financed by the sale of Kuyt. With Benitez already being made aware by Liverpool’s American owners that any new signings in January will have to be funded by the sale of players at the club.

      Source?

Rafa won't sell Kuyt. Especially not in January.

I've heard of him. Nothing about his ability though :D

Maybe Rafa doesn't see Kuyt as a striker at all anymore, and N'Gog isn't quite ready yet.

agree...N'gog obviously not ready for the first team action. But El-Zhar is.
but i read that thing rafa said bout 'doing the dirty work', to me it's true..eventho we have the likes of nando n stevie in the squad, we also need a player like kuyt who attack n also do the defensive work.
just like he did against man utd, everton, n man city...did very well closing down n always chasing oppsotion.
kuyt reminds of Luis Garcia, he scored some of our important goals.

but if this Cavenaghi is a better buy. why not... :D

      IN RAFA WE TRUST!

Maybe for now we should forget about signing strikers, I don't think we lack at all in that department. Torres alone is a much more powerful strikeforce then the entire set of Everton's forwards put together, Torres and Keane will make them look like a poor U12 side.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing to this article. It's only October for goodness sake.

well we know rafa..he likes to put players in wrong positions...if kuyt exits, it's possible for cavenaghi to play on the right wing...hahah
agree..torres n keane be nightmare for defenders..

Rafa would sooner sell his limbs than sell Kuyt. The bloke is playing every game on the right wing, so why would Rafa want to sell him?

Rafa would not sell kuyt 'cos he treats him like his own son. IRWT, after all nowadays he's playing good.

Bah! Pure journalistic bullshit. Any link to Dirk lieaving will be chewed on and spat out. Rafa selling Kuyt is like him giving up his daughter.

I love Kuyt as a player. Nice to see the positive comments on here about him :). Sick of hearing people slag him off because he doesnt score enough, but he's our RIGHT WINGER now and he does the job very impressively. One of my favourite players without a doubt :)

It's a bit sad how journalists can constantly link us with selling and buying ( in a nice way RANDOM ) players.

Cant see there being any truth in this. Kuyt is as important to us as Gerrard or Torres. We could do with another striker in my opinion. With Torres out for 3 maybe 4 games i dont think we have a decent replacement. Babbel could do a job up front but he is injured too. Damn these international breaks.

Torres, Babel, N'Gog, Kuyt, Keane not enough for you? And we have Nemeth if things get really bad.

      Torres is mostly injured.

The rest are far from prolific.

We cannot have 3 good strikers trying to take 1-2 striking positions.

I think Fernando and Keane are good enough and we just need someone relatively good like Kuyt and Babel just behind them as cover. N'gog, Nemeth, Pacheco aren't up to it yet.

whats your reason for wanting another striker at the club if it  means Kuyt leaving ? If im not mistaken he is having the best season he has had since his arrival and he has got some crucial goals which without we would not be 2nd in the league.

2 Nandos are better than one, ;D. We had Fernando Morientes as well.
They should get out and open a Nando's restaurant.
