I think with Anelka, Houllier had his own ideas when it came to Diouf so that was the end of that. I was gutted myself, but it really just was one of those things. I wouldn't say he's been one of the most prolific goalscorers in recent years, but there's not really any evidence to suggest he will have flopped at Anfield, or shot us to the title!
Michael Owen was surrounded in uncertainty, unsure of how Benitez saw him. At the end of the day, we have progressed admirably since he left so there's nothing to make us feel he could have made a difference, especially considering the finale to Benitez' first season. I still don't agree when fans sing 'Where were you in Istanbul?' at some matches. We didn't see it coming, never mind Owen!
McManaman's departure, I cannot blame. We weren't exactly setting the world alight, and Real Madrid come in for you. His move proved to be the best of his career, lining his personal medal haul nicely.
This season I've been gutted that Steve Finnan left. It can never hurt having enough cover at the back and Finnan rarely put a foot wrong. I was gutted when he left and, as always, wish him the best of luck in Spain.
Luis Garcia could also be seen as one of these players. He always had that magic touch in the big matches, but never showed the consistency we all craved. I'm sort of glad he left in his prime, so to speak, because a lot of people look at Riise a lot different now because of the Chelsea semi./ I'd have hated that to happen to Garcia after his goals in 2005.
