      ARBELOA EYES MARSEILLE RESPONSE

      Paul Hassall 24 November 2008

Alvaro Arbeloa is confident Liverpool will book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League by taking out their Fulham frustration on Marseille.
The Reds full-back admits it was disappointing to drop two points against the Cottagers but feels his teammates will bounce back with victory against the French outfit.

"It was very frustrating," he told Liverpoolfc.tv following saturday's 0-0 draw with Fulham.

"We always have the same problem when teams come to Anfield. They play really compact and narrow but it's up to us to break them down.

"We now need to turn attention to the Champions League. We need to make sure we put this behind us by beating Marseille so that we qualify for the next round."

The Spain international, who has enjoyed an impressive start to the season, believes the Reds are missing a clinical touch in front of goal and admits they were relieved to hear that Chelsea had also drawn a blank in their clash with Newcastle United.

"It's not a bad result for us," he said, referring to Chelsea's draw.

"They have also dropped two points so it could have been worse. We still feel we should have done our job and won the game though.

"We had two or three clear chances to score and we have to start taking them because otherwise you make life difficult for yourself.

"In the first-half we didn't play that well. We improved in the second-half but we couldn't find the goal to win the match. Once you get the first in a match like this it makes the rest of the match much easier."

       *******************************************************************************************************

Hopefully Liverpool will put the disappointment of Saturday right behind them, and give us a display of football like we know they can.

Can't wait for this game to be honest, I just hope the crowd are up for it a bit more than they were for the A.Madrid game, so if you are going on Wednesday and I am then make some noise.

I'm sure Rafa will get his tactics right for this one and Stevie hopefully will be back as well, god we missed him so much on Saturday.

I'm going for 2-0 for this one, but to be honest any victory will do me.

Come on The Mighty Red Men.

i think we'll edge it, dominate possesion but within our own half, frustrating marseille into making a mistake, im going to go 2-0 with kuyt and torres as scorers, hopefully though after saturdays game, the lads will be out to prove a point and do destroy them

I just want to see a solid win from us at home. We don't seem to really do that enough at home. I don't want to see a repeat of the last UCL game where we need penalty call to bail us out or last season where they played us off the park and we looked like we never wanted to be there. I would be nice to win this game, have the place booked and them lets some of the reserve/young players get a run out in Eindhoven.

I think we will see a few changes and some of the players who were calling for a game might get a chance.

      I would go with

      - - - - - - - - - - Pepe - - - - - - - - - - -
      Arboloa - - Carra - - Agger - - Aurelio
      - - - - - - - Alonso - - Javi - - - - - - - -
      Kuyt - - - - - - Yossi - - - - - - - Babel
      - - - - - - - - - - Torres - - - - - - - - -

Bench: Diego, Sami, Dossena, Gerrard, Riera, N'Gog, Keane

Alonso for Lucas is no brainier and I would give Yossi and Babel a run out to see if they can back their words up. Gerrard I would bring him in after 60 minutes to get a run out and save him for West Ham.

We're not allowed Sami on the bench, as he hasn't been entered in our CL squad. :(

Looking at the squad list I would think Pennant might get a seat on the bench or maybe Darby

      Arbeloa----------------Aurelio
      --------Xabi----Masch-------
      Kuyt--------------------Riera

      I'll go for 0-0.

Rather Gerrard didn't play to be completely honest, if he's still recovering from that muscle injury.  I know I'm sounding like a broken record but the weekends game is of far more importance to me so I'd probably play a strong line up but not our first choice XI.  Maybe Keane can have a game? And Lucas - he's popular.

Strong chance the Doss might get a game I think, and I think Benayoun and Babel could figure.

This game again depends on when we score. Early on and we win easily but I think a goaless first half will mean a 0-0 or 1-0. I hope Babel plays with Torres.

1-0 for me. Torres with the goal.

As much as I don't like our players mouthing off in any of the press about how they're going to bounce back from a poor result, it's good to hear Arby and the rest of the lads want to basically get the Fulham game out of their system. And they can only do that by producing a good performance and be a bit more clinical in front of goal.

I've no doubt Alonso will start and I'm pretty sure Mascherano will start alongside him. If Gerrard isn't fully fit, then don't play him. It's as simple as that for me. As much as we might have missed him at the weekend, I want him fresh for the West Ham game.

I've got a sneaky feeling Dossena will get the nod over Aurelio because it's looking more apparent that Rafa prefers Aurelio for the league. But I'd prefer Aurelio.

There's no doubt in my mind that Marseille are going to come at us - they have to try get a result. So we have to be clever on the ball and disciplined at the back.

Personally I think we'll score a few goals if we get Torres on the ball early. Non of his trying to walk the ball into the net nonsense on Wednesday please. Hit them hard and fast!

What i think our lineup should look like:

                      pepe
      arbeloa  carra  agger  Dossena
                 masch xabi
      Yossi       Keane      Babel
                      Torres

I know it sounds weak, but i really think we should be capable of beating marseille with this lineup. Our priority should be against West ham cuz the weaker teams know that they have a good chance getting a point at anfield if they defend like their life depends on it. We are not famous for being creative with the ball.

European tie at Anfield? Never has me worried, always expect to win with ease.

The team selection? Well that really depends what names Benitez happens to pull out of the hat at breakfast.

Result? 2-0 win for the Reds.

Dirk Kuyt instead of Yossi,he's phisicaly our most prepared player, strong like a race horse. He can play 90 min in both games withoth a problem.I wouldn't force Steavi G on this one and i would save him for West ham,Premiership matters the most

To be honest id be tempted to start with saturdays team except have Alonso in midfield and not Lucas maybe just have Torres on his own and no keane! Should be a game we should win but they are a much better team than last season so dont think will be as easy as PSV but should be a comfortable win

      Reina
      Arbeloa Carra. Agger Dossena
              Masch.  Alonso
                   Gerrard
      Benayoun                   Babel
                   Torres

1-0 torres in the first 10 minutes.

      Reasons:
Arby, Carra, Agger --> There is noone that can replace them right now.
Dossena --> i think 'cos rafa want to protect aurelio from getting injured & leave him for satuaday.
Masch & alonso --> we need them to control the midfield and also 'cos we dont have any good replacement.
Benayoun & babel --> they need match fitness and need to show why they complain on leaving them on the bench
Gerrard --> he's our engine & i dont need to continue.
Torres --> he was brilliant last weekand & need to score.

Keane needs to be rested for every reason.
Reira & kuyt need a little rest & put them in if needed

I would like to see Babel out on the pitch and if Stevie G isn't fit then let him play up front just behind Torres and even with two up front find a way of giving the guy regular games, the more games he gets the sharper he'll be....

We can't aford to underestimate these. If Stevie's not fit, play Babel behind Torres. Let's see what he can do up there. Keane on the bench.      Pepe
                                Arbeloa   Carra   Agger  Aurelio
                              Kuyt     Alonso      Masch       Riera
                                              Babel
                                                  Torres.
Stevie for Babel if fit. As we've said before, Start strong, rest when the games won.  As above.. 3-0 by half time and a big rest for Stevie or Babel, Riera and Kuyt. Bring on Keane and Yossi.

Well, for once, i'd go with last season's formation.

      -----------------------Reina--------------------------
      Arby-----Carra----Agger----Aurelio/Dossena
      Kuyt---------Masch----------Xabi----------Riera
      -------------------Gerrard--------------------------
      -----------------Torres---------------------------

Can't take any chances, put the best team in and get it done sooner then take 3 players out to rest them when we are in a good position.

I think its a must that we play as an attacking formation as possible. I have watched a bit of Marseille this season and they are very frail at the back as we highlighted in the first match. Given the dissapointment of Saturday and the fact that this is a home European tie and we are struggling in the goals department we need to be attacking minded from the first whistle.

Their play is dictated by two key players in midfeld Cana and Valbuena I think its vital to have Stevie behind Nando to press on Cana and force alot of errors and mispassed in the middle. We will need Kuyt from the begininng I am a little puzzled as to why alot of people have left him out of their line ups. I will not predict a result but a win is in order.

I would pick that team too. Babel and Keane to come on in the second half.

That team is well-balanced for attacking and defending.

2-0 win. Gotta get up early for this one so it better be worth it. Strong line up, need to use our key players to get a win and get morale up. Not fussed by this match to honest, obviously dont want to lose, but the way we play is much more important. Get confidence in our play before letting players 'have a go'.

RAFA: WE WANT TO QUALIFY TONIGHT

      James Carroll 26 November 2008

Rafa Benitez took ten minutes out of his pre-Marseille preparations to talk to radio journalists about the game and the fitness of Steven Gerrard.

Journalist: It's another big European night. For you personally, it's a bit of a milestone as you'll take charge of Liverpool in Europe for the 66th time, which is more than any other Liverpool manager...

Rafa Benitez: I am proud to be in this position and I hope to be here
for another 66 matches. I think it is a good achievement for any
manager, especially at a top club like Liverpool because that means
that the team is doing well in Europe and that is positive for the
      club.

Journalist: So you are aware of the whole history of European football because a lot of managers would say 'I am only concentrating on the match' and 'I don't care about statistics' but you obviously are proud...

I am proud but I am more focussed on Marseille. I was not aware of the record until someone told me recently, but it is good. When I was in Madrid, Liverpool beat Madrid 1-0 in the European Cup Final. The
Madrid goalkeeper was my mate and I knew some of the other players so I am well aware of the history of Liverpool in Europe.

Journalist: How much is the success in Europe having an effect on the league form and the success you've had in the Premier League this
season? Is that in turn pushing the players on in all competitions?

When you are a top side you have four competitions to compete in
so it can be difficult to concentrate in all of them but the Champions
League and Premier League are massive. Hopefully we can qualify and then we can concentrate on the Premier League.

Journalist: You have talked about the club's history and your own
personal achievement. Does the weight of expectation get more difficult every year?

Yeah, we have experience of this. After my first year everybody was talking about winning something and doing well. Because we had won
the Champions League, expectations were too high. Now we are trying
to win the Premier League but in England the other teams are so good
that it is really difficult. I think we have keep working as hard as
we are now in order to win the Premier League and other competitions.

Journalist: There's almost been a backlash to the Fulham result in the press. Are you surprised at how quickly people forget what a good run you've been on?

[Laughs] I can guarantee you that I was not reading the press! I was really disappointed after the Fulham game but the following day I was preparing for this game. In the Premiership, we are at the top of the table and in a fantastic position. If we can beat Marseille then we will qualify for next stage of the Champions League. Clearly the situation is much better for us than it has been in the last three
years. We are doing well in all competitions apart from the Carling
Cup, where we made a mistake which we paid for, but everybody knows
that the priority is the Premier League and the Champions League and
      then the FA Cup.

Journalist: What are you expecting from Marseille? Another similar
set-up to Fulham at the weekend?

No, I don't think so. It will be difficult as they have some good
players who are quick and have ability. They showed last season that
they are good at counter-attacking. They have to win so they must
decide whether to play deep and leave the possession to us or come and
attack, so it will be interesting to see but we have our own plan and
      idea.

Journalist: How important is it that you finish the job against
Marseille so you don't have to worry when you go to Eindhoven?

Last season we only had one point after three games in the Champions League so we knew that we needed to win every game to qualify. Two years ago, we had qualified before we played the last group game so we were able to try out some young players against Galatasaray. Qualifying is the most important thing and I think it is better to finish first in the group, but we were knocked out by Benfica after finishing first while we have beaten Juventus and Inter Milan after finishing second. The main thing is to qualify to allow us to concentrate on the Premier League.

      Journalist: How is Steven Gerrard?

He is okay. He was training this morning so I think that he will be fit for Marseille. I don't know if he can play 90 minutes, that depends on his fitness, but he can start if we want to use him.

Journalist: Do you know how important he is then?

Yes we know he is important but I think that every player here is
important. Gerrard and Fernando Torres are players who have scored goals in the last two or three years, almost always in Gerrard's case, so it is important to keep them fit.

Journalist: And you need them for the big occasions and this is a big occasion...

Yes. They are top class players and they can show the quality that
they have in the big games.

Journalist: Any other injury problems at all?

Degen and Skrtel. The rest of the players are fit.

      **************************************************************************************************

Rafa seems fairly positive in that interview, I just hope the players are up for this tonight, I want to see us get at them right from the start, really let them know there in for a fight, and hit them where it hurts.

A couple of early goals should get the crowd on their feet...........until there told to sit down by the Stewards  ::)

I just want us to qualify as soon as possible, put Europe behind us and concentrate on West Ham and three points on Monday.

Enjoy the game everyone, I will be leaving home for the match in about an hour, looking forward to yet another trip to Anfield and my home town of Liverpool.

      COME ON THE REDS !!!!
