      Top Scorers
      Jan 14, 2009 11:03:27 pm
      This seasons top scorers currently stand as;

      Pos.   Player                Goals     Team
      1       Nicolas Anelka     14        Chelsea
      2 .     Robinho             11        Manchester City
3       Amr Zaki            10        Wigan Athletic
4      Gabriel Agbonlahor 9        Aston Villa
5       Cristiano Ronaldo  8         Manchester United
5       Robin Van Persie  8         Arsenal
      5       Frank Lampard     8         Chelsea
      5       Steven Gerrard    8         Liverpool
      5       Djibril Cissé          8          Sunderland
5       Michael Owen      8         Newcastle United
      5       Peter Crouch       8         Portsmouth

Why are we continually having striker problems and looking for strikers when out of the top 11 scorers this season, 4 are current or ex liverpool players.

the list continues to include Bellamy, Kuyt, Torres and Keane, all 5 or more this season.

why do we always seem to have a problem with strikers and scoring. Reina has collected the Golden Glove for the last 4 seasons or something like that so our problem is with scoring goals, not our defence. I think im generalising too much, but wouldnt it be nice to still have them ex-players on our books with this sort of top scorer lineup.

didn't have much of a problem last season when nando was fit and well.   just unfortunate he's been injured so much this season.

5 of those players have played here at some point or another, problem is, only one of them is this year

You also have to remember that most of them at their current clubs are the main (if not only) goal threat. Anelka, Cisse and Crouch were never the number one goalscorer at Anfield.

sorry , yes, i totally forgot about anelka.!

also of course they werent anfields number one goal threat, but why did we not have these sorts of performances when they where at liverpool, bar owen of course!.

I just wish we could see Nando gerrard and Keane up there all with goals for liverpool, having said that weve scored the 3rd most goals this season, 35, behind Chelsea's 40.

      That's why.

Crouch was never a regular starter for Liverpool but when he did play he scored. I still think selling him was the biggest mistake this club has made in transfers under Benitez.

Cisse just wasn't given the chance he is at Sunderland. One week he'd be out the right, the next the left, the next dropped, the next up front. I'm not saying had he been up top all the time he'd of been great but that's why he didn't perform to this current standard.

Anelka was competing with Owen and with any forward in the world at that time, Owen would come out on top.

Also you have to remember teams like Sunderland get more space than us, because sides are more determined to stop us playing than they are Sunderland. Teams like Blackburn, Bolton, Stoke and the like are happy with a point against Liverpool but not Sunderland (and to a lesser extent Portsmouth). So there's more freedom for Cisse and Crouch to exploit at these teams. As for Anelka, so many of his goals have been unmissable or just good fortune (Blackburn springs to mind).

Should have seen Anelka's hat trick this season. Every goal was like a cheap one :P

      I agree about Crouch.
He usually delivered for us and when he was in a rich vein of form, scoring for fun for the Reds and England, Rafa inexplicably benches him long enough for the splinters in his arse to sprout leaves!
      I still havn't worked out why. ??? ??? ???

Perhaps behind the scenes he rubbed Benitez the wrong way.

I think we should never have let him go.
His aerial threat put the fear into opposition defences. I miss him dearly. :'(

      Rafa's worst move to date.

He left because he wanted regular first team football and Rafa honestly told him he wasn't going to get it. Simply really.

I didn't want him to leave either but when someone wants to leave to play regular football, in my eyes you have to let them go.

Sorry to go off topic a bit.

Anyway, I think that Anelka won't be staying up there for long. If I'm honest I didn't expect Cisse to do that well, but fair play to the lad he's grabbed a fair few goals.

One Torres hat-trick and he enters that list, and he's been injured for a fair few months :D

Shows how awesome the lad is.

Personally, I want Stevie to beat his record of 23 goals in a season he got i think in 2004/2005. He got 21 last season. Would like him to reach 25, at least.

Also the fact he wouldn't sign on to a new contract so if we did keep him and assuming that he would play a similar role to last year he would of left on a free at the end of the season.

Steven is doing awsome for liverpool at the moment for a midfielder,  I still do not believe he is at the top of his game,  Next season or the season after he will be scoring around 20 to 25, thats my opinion anyways.
