      Sami up front?
      Jan 26, 2009 08:07:42 pm
Does anybody think that we could use Sami as a target man, particularly at Anfield, for the last ten minutes of games where we aren't breaking down 10 man defences?

He'd win a huge % of headers which the likes of Nando and Stevie could get on the end of. Our crossing from the byline is non existent so why not try this option? Don't get me wrong here I'm not saying lets become long ball merchants but it would give stubborn defences something different to think about

I think it would be a good idea, but of course it's dependant on whether Sami is actually playing, seeing as Martin is more likely to be playing nowadays, I think we could use him for the same job if needs be. Obviously he doesn't have strikers instinct but he will win most headers and could potentially provide something for a goal scorer like Torres.

I'm all for this tactic and I always feel a little more confident in our attacking abilities with Sami on the pitch, he's a great threat in our set plays and he's often proven what a great striker of the ball he can be.

I've seen other big clubs try this out, usually when they're behind though and pushing for an equaliser, but like you say, we don't seem to be able to break down those stubborn defenses at the moment, especially at home.  I think it's definately worth a try......but Rafa's the man who needs convincing!

Oh sorry, misinterpreted it. I still think it is a good idea though, particularly against teams that put 10 men behind the ball for a 0-0. We have really struggled to win games this season when we have come up against opposing teams that do that.

Didnt Chelsea do this with Robert huth once or twice a while back? (not too sure though)

Anyway the thought has crossed my mind many times before. Sami is a huge presence in any box. and I've always believed every team needs an areal specialist in our attacking options for those coward teams like Stoke and Everton.

      It might just work.
I like the idea, who knows, he might even score from up there himself.

United did it with Vidic a few weeks back and he got a winner against Sunderland.

I'm all for this idea, provided we can put the supply in the box....

I also like this idea but I think Agger would be a better option. He can play the ball , he has a very good shot and he is very good in the air (not as good as Sami but still good enough).
Sami can head the ball but he is very slow.We saw it in Monday when Stevie shot, Howard safe and Hyypia can't reach the ball to score it.

It is an option we could use but it is not an option we should use!? It is a short term fix to the problem but we need to put focus on our attacking players. They know they are mis firing, make them stay back for an hour after training with Cavalieri and play a through ball and make them finnish it!

We all know that there is enough pressure on defenders without the attacking players responsibilities as well.

But like I said this could be a short term fix, but there is always the risk it could become the norm.
