This is a very good piece of article. The type that is worth reading.
Sad that a lot of the fans have all, but throw in the towel concerning our title bid. While I am tired of the oft used signature comment by our Master tactician, Rafa Benitez, I still think We're still in a very good position to win the league.
Liverpool inquests don't require evidence from Fernando Torres
Many newspapers are reporting that Rafa Benitez is 'downbeat' after defeat to Middlesbrough - a defeat that leaves Manchester United with enough space to canter home unless it evokes memories of Devon Loch in the finishing straight. But whilst most top managers would be downbeat after losing to a team in the relegation zone - there are plenty of reasons for Liverpool to be upbeat right now.
This remains the best league season that Liverpool has had in recent years; not since Gerard Houllier's 'ten games from greatness' moment in 2002 has Liverpool been this close to the title in March. Only a once-in-a-generation run from Manchester United has knocked the stuffing out of title race.
And yet if Liverpool wins tonight the gap at the top will be four points; and games in hand can be lost as well as won.
In Europe Liverpool is on the brink of eliminating Real Madrid and must be about due another run to the final. Liverpool is also provisionally considered the top team in Europe over the last five years according to Uefa's coefficient scoring system, with 114.143 points from 2004-9, ahead of Milan (110.406), Chelsea (110.143) and Barcelona (109.428). Although the official figures will still show Chelsea as number one because Uefa only currently recognises European results from 2003-8 as counting.
The league and European records are enough justification for Rafa Benitez; so I'm unsure why he has now turned to suggesting that Liverpool's season has been blown off course by injuries to Fernando Torres. Torres is having something off a difficult second season, missing twelve league games out of twenty-seven. But he appears to be a sharp player who, unlike Michael Owen say, is quickly back into his stride once he regains fitness. Given Benitez's mastery of statistics it seems an odd claim.
Statistically Liverpool has won the five league games where Torres has scored, but Liverpool concedes so few goals that it usually wins games it scores in. Liverpool has scored in 21 league games this season - winning 16 of them.
The simple truth is that Liverpool is lagging in the league because of too many home draws.
Increasing research and planning at the poorer (in cash terms) Premier League clubs means that most of the top teams are struggling to win home games; the only club that has cracked the secret of home success this season is the one leading the division. Whether Torres is in the team or not, this season, the results that Liverpool achieves are not statistically different. But why should an inquest be convening now? The league is still there to be fought for and hunting around for reasons to be miserable should not be on the Liverpool manager's agenda; he should be signing his contract, seeing off Sunderland at Anfield and plotting a win at Old Trafford in a fortnight.
