      Brad Friedel's red card overturned
      Mar 24, 2009 08:07:34 pm
      http://www.4thegame.com/club/aston-villa-fc/news/232859/friedel_wins_red_card_appeal.html

Brad Friedel is available to face Manchester United after Aston Villa successfully appealed against the red card shown to the goalkeeper against Liverpool.

The veteran shot-stopper was sent off in the 64th minute at Anfield on Sunday in a game which the Midlands club lost 5-0.

Referee Martin Atkinson ruled that Friedel was guilty of a professional foul on Fernando Torres after the pair collided and the home side were awarded a penalty.

After the heavy defeat, Friedel questioned the decision to send him off after claiming there was little he could do to avoid the collision.

Villa immediately suggested they would appeal the dismissal and a Football Association disciplinary panel has now overturned the red card.

The American keeper is now set to continue his record-breaking run of consecutive Premier League games against United at Old Trafford when Villa resume action on April 5.

Friedel had said: "I just stood my ground and, as the cameras show, I turned my shoulders to show that I didn't try to make contact. He is the one who ran in and made contact with me.

"Does he have an argument for a penalty sure, does he have an argument for a booking sure, but sending off is very harsh considering he had a defender alongside him?"

I'm glad it's been rescinded, he didn't deserve to be sent off, he got a standing ovation from the Kop.

And at least he'll be able to face manure as well   ;D

That standing ovation was great, but I don't think it was much consolation at the time!

I have a lot of respect from Friedel and I'm delighted to see the card rescinded, now go save everything at OT.

That pretty much sums up how I feel about it. I was delighted to see him get the ovation.

Now Brad go out there and play the way you did against Man Ure last season for Blackburn (what a great performance that was). :):):)

He looked gutted when he realised what had happened, the Kop turned from cheers for the pen to groans when Friedel was sent off, I'm sure he appreciated the support when he looked back at events.

When he joined Villa, he made snide comments about Liverpool FC. I started to dislike him then.

Missed a couple of mins, train was delayed by 20 minutes or so. Got in just when Skrtel has that header from the corner.

Guessing you enjoyed the game then, seems like you have a knack of getting to the high-scoring games! :D

      Staying on topic.......Friedel is awesome.

You better have tickets for the rest of the home games then! :D

Clearly Reo-Coker was running alongside Torres at the time of the incident.

Referees demand answers after Aston Villa keeper Friedel's red card against Liverpool is wiped out

The Professional Game Match Officials Board have written to the Football Association for an explanation after Brad Friedel's red card was rescinded.

Friedel was given a straight red card during Aston Villa's 5-0 defeat by Liverpool on Sunday for bringing down Fernando Torres in the penalty area when the Spaniard was through on goal.

The FA yesterday upheld Villa's appeal and the American's red card was wiped out with reports emerging today that the decision had provoked a concerned response from senior referees.

The Premier League today admitted the PGMO would be writing to the FA but denied there was any major row.

A Premier League spokesman said: 'The PGMO have sought clarification from the FA on the reasons why the appeal panel found against the referee.

'Through a letter to the FA the PGMO just want to be sure to get all the detail on why the appeal panel found the way they did.

'Throughout the season you've got a number of different appeals that go forward and it's important the referees get to the bottom of precisely why the panel will have found in the way it did.'

Don't think so, they just want to know why the card was rescinded. I guess in theory to help them enforce the rules even more "perfectly".  ::)

Imagine how much Fergie will go red-faced complaining about how the "FA lost him the title" if they do lose because of a superb Friedel performance and allow us to win the 19th. He'll be unbearable...

I really hope he saves three penalties and does a "Reina" to setup the winner. :D
