Rafa tips Gerrard for top award

LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez believes Steven Gerrard should be named PFA Player of the Year.



Manchester United stars Nemanja Vidic and Ryan Giggs are the front-runners for the end-of-season award from their fellow professionals.

But Benitez reckons his inspirational captain is more deserving and warned his rivals that Gerrard can get even better.

“He would be my vote,” said Benitez. “If he can continue playing at this level, then why not?

“For me, Stevie is one of the best players in the world. To say one is the best above anyone else is difficult because there are a lot of quality players about, but he is one of the best. That is clear.

“He is more mature, he is still learning and tactically he is improving. He can still play better because he has the potential.”


Cant disagree with that. The most positive thing at the moment is all the good noises from our Manager and our captain they seemed to have found a mutual respect which is all good.

Wow. Praise from Rafa? He really is cracking up.

Here's what i genuinely think will happen.
If United win the title it will be : 1. Vidic 2. Gerrard 3. Giggs
If we win the title it will be      : 1. Gerrard 2. Vidic 3. Giggs

Gerrard deserves it no matter who wins the title now, but the FA are so fickle that they'll give it to the player who's team has a more successful season.
Having said that there's still eight games to go and 2-5 more in europe for each side so there's still alot that can be done to change people's minds

Well if vidic can get it with his two reds and his shoking display against us.
What about skirtle he has been outstanding again this year solid and not a blemish on his record but it proves once again you only get praise if you play for the mancs.

Exactly.
How on earth can you be called player of the season if most of your appearances are from the bench?
I agree that he has had effect from the bench in a lot of united's games this season you have to do more than that to warrant a player of the season award.
Sub of the season maybe.

I just think Rafa is simply right Stevie does deserve it. 21 goals in all competitions that is awesome.

Gerrard has already equalled his 21 goals from last year. That shows how great he's been this season and rightfully deserves to be the PFA player of the year.

I think he'll get at least 8 more from now til the end of the season.

depends on the remaining games,  it will be close between vidic and gerrard, but gerrard will win it. Giggs, what kind of joke is that?

It will seem strange to the mancs when their hold on the title will lose its grasp, and whatever happens Stevie SHOULD get this award. He has been outstanding since he broke into the first team and in my opinion the man should be held in the highest regard by every football lover. Every player should aspire to be like the great man.

As for the other two, what a joke. These lugs are nowhere near the same standard as Stevie.

I want to see this again...he deserves it...a true superstar.

I don't think these awards are often given to the right players. Most of the mancs awards are of a political adgenda. i.e. the nighthoods that have only contributed to the devaluation of the said award. I expect giggs will win it as he won't be playing for much longer, and as it is patently obvious that he hasn't been anywhere near a player of the year this season, there goes another award, cheapened by the mancs.

Gerrard scored 23 goals the last time he won the award and he's got 21 this season.

He's got to be a massive contender.

Giggs? Granted, he is a good player, but it seems the only reason he's in contention is because he is 35 and still going.
He can't play every game and most of his appearances are off the bench. If he was 24 and not a Manc he wouldn't be shortlisted.

Gerrard has played in almost all of our games, and has been our most dynamic player. How many times has he rescued us this season? Probably a similar figure to Gigg's sub appearances.

if u ask me.. definitely yes.. i mean.. havin a injury hampered season.. i think he will finish as the top scorer of the year.. plus his affect on the team.. it sums up to give him the award..

nd if we win th title.. then no doubt..

Stevie deserves this award.

My newspapers today published the top 10 players in the BPL so far, surprisingly, Stevie is 10th :S

stevie should win this by miles he has probably been the best and most consistant player in the premier league for the last two or three seasons , giggs is past his best now and can only get a place on the man ure bench and as for vidic he makes too many basic errors like the one for torres goal

If the decision process is legit than gerrard would win for sure. How giggs can be mentioned I dont know and vidic well I don't believe thar someone who gets red carded (twice I think) shouldn't be entitled either.
