Who will fill the vacant numbers from our current squad?

At the moment we have numbers 3, 6 and 7 available from the traditional 1 to 11. By the start of next season, we may have 5 and 10 as well but that's up for debate, just not in this thread.

So from our current squad who would you give those numbers to? (note current squad - i.e. not Villa, Barry, Silva or Postman Pat)

For me number 3 has always been a full backs number so I think Insua may be given that number for next season since it looks like he has a big part to play in the future of the club.

Number 6? Well I'd love Skrtel to get that number. It's a centre halves number, traditionally, and who better to wear it than somebody who is always dependable. Although six has often been our ball playing centre half, (Hughes, Hansen, Babb). Not too sure on who else would be in conetention for that number.

Number 7? Well there's a few possibilities. Masch would be my choice to add a bit of magic around the number 7 again because he is one of those players who can be relied on. Babel was the favourite at the start of this season but after disappointing more often than not this year I don't think there'll be as much hype surrounding him and the number 7 this summer. Xabi is a possible but 14 is his favourite number although I remember hearing he's waiting for big Sami to retire then have the number 4 shirt as that was the number his dad wore. Kuyt for me will actually be handed the number 7 shirt though, it was his number for Feyenoord and I think he is a consistant performer. Being one of the first names on the team sheet, I think it makes sense to give it to Kuyt.

Kuyt-7 I just cant see Masch given this number he is a defensive mid and the number 7 is traditionally associated with attacking minded players (some prolific ones like Kewell and Keane) Dirk works his balls of every game and has proven this season he can pop up wiht crucial goals.

What number do you guys suggest for Darby ...I don't think 10 will suit him .

Well in that case then, I wouldn't give it to anyone.  Xabi's number has, and always will be the No.14, it's his signature now.  Dirk is a hard worker, but not worthy of the No.7 shirt.

because he has grown into the deep lying striker role, which is the classic no.7 position. He is by far the only player we have worthy of the no. 7. No way should it be Kuyt.

Hey don't judge JAR on his last season for us or on the own goal against Chelsea.  For his first few years he was a top, top player and I don't need to mention his fair share of goals, spectacular as they were.  I think people sometimes forget how good he actually was in his prime based on his below par performances during the last season he was with us.

Yeah it ended badly for Mr Riise but we can't judge 7 years of loyal service on one game or one season. I think John himself realised he was no longer up to the pressure of the Premiership anymore and done the honourable thing by sodding off to Italy.

If Insua can achieve half of what Riise did then he'll of done well to say the least.

It's also possible that the number 1 shirt will be available again if the Cavilieri deal goes through. Reina is the obvious choice but I'm sure he turned it down when Dudek left, so maybe not so obvious.

Yossi's favourite number is 15 as he had it at all his previous clubs so he wont change, whats the point in changing Agger from 5 to 6? may as well put Skrtel as 6.

I dont think Alonso would even think about swapping numbers, he'll stay at 14 for club and country. And dont be too hard on dirk, he gives so much for this club and certainly more than our last few No7's.

Think it's more likely to be the other way round mate as Skrtel's number for Slovakia is 3. Although during pre-season Degen was wearing 6 quite a bit.

As for number 7, I'd leave it vacant for now. Maybe Gerrard's successor in 5-6 years time should get it.

He's earnt the right to wear the number 7 but as you say it say it wont happen. Might next summer though when we get a new home kit.

We at Liverpool have been spoilt with some magnificent number 7's in our illustrious history Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Peter Beardsley and Steve Macmanaman to name but a few.

IMO I would love to see Gerrard take on the roll of Number 7 as I think it can phase a lot of players and can become a burden of the history the are trying to fulfill something Gerrard would never suffer with.

If Gerrard was not to take on the shirt and we are not to sign any specific player for this shirt, I think Kuyt should be handed it as he has earned it through his industry and work rate and would be the ultimate accolade to how he has turned things around for him self within the club.

I'd definitely give Kelly 6, love him as a player and deserves regular first team football once he returns.

I think Sturridge would be better suited to number 10, don't think he's an out and out number 9 kinda player if that makes sense. When I think of 9 I think of God and Rushie, would rather we keep that vacant.

As for 4, maybe Lucas or Shelvey? Suso too attacking for that number, he's more of an 8, 11

Re Carroll I think the club did right mate, he still our player so it's good to see the club show respect to the player, because we are LFC
