let somebody earn the shirt, they should start with a different number and try to earn it by playing well, then if they become a star player they should have it, atm i would give it to yossi.

Yeah. Let someone earn it. Yossi has said his favourite number is 15, but ATM he's the  one I'd give the 7 to.

If it came down to earning it then i'd give it to Kuyt.

His work ethic is second to none, he doesn't complain at being played out of position and he chips in with important and unexpected goals.

The man gives 110% in every game and he loves Liverpool.

I say Kuyt for number 7!

Couldn't agree with you more  I'd totally give it to Dirk Kuyt instead of a new signing because he earned it and works hard for the club  , while contributing with very very vital goals and gives his all every game and loves Liverpool F.C I think he deserves it !

If Kenny comes back, give it to him, after all, even at his age he has still got to be better than some of the recent previous wearers.

Don't retire it in my opinion, the guy is a legend, but retiring the shirt numbers is really cliché, we can come up with something better than that in my opinion.

But why has King Kenny not been knighted? :S

      Could be.

      Anyone mentioned Ian Callaghan?

856 (Eight Hundred and Fifty Six ) performances as our number 7.

I think the shirt shouldnt be retired but I do think that the number should have Dalglish name written into it somehow

I think that would just put more pressure on the player wearing it in my opinion.

No it wasn't mate. Cally played a lot of games in the same side as Keegan who wore 7 throughout his Liverpool career. Then Cally played with "King" Kenny and we all know what number he wore.

Cally did wear the number 7 a few times, but he certainly didn't wear it during every single one of his 856 games.

The whole idea is stupid.  If we retired a shirt everytime it was worn by a'legend' we'd be in treble figures by now.  Who is a legend is also a subjective matter anyway.

Time doesn't stand still and no doubt there will be a great player in the Liverpool tradition who will wear the number 7 shirt in the future.

Like our owners (mortgagers) this is another idea we don't need to import from America.

Thanks for that.  I stand corrected.

      Ask the expert.

What I do remember, is standing in the Kop and from where I stood  Cally flying in on the left of me and Thommo checking in from the right!
