New Coldplay song Midnight. Produced and co written by one of my favourite and one of the best ambient/electronic artists around - Jon Hopkins! Great seeing a popular band prepared to try something different musically.

Little pop gem that one. Thought their last album was an overproduced mess but its sounds like they've found a slick, winning formula this time round. Don't care what people say. Aside from the Hollywood wife and some overplayed songs I think Coldplay are a talented group. I think their guitarist's minimalist and acute playing style on many of their songs is beautiful. The undue stick they get from is beyond tiresome nowadays.

Meanwhile listening to more from Jon Hopkins

Can't stop listening to Black Submarine's debut album.
They are Nick McCabe and Simon Jones' (former The Verve's guitarist and bassist) new band. I absolutely love McCabe's guitar, he's one of the very best ever in my eyes. Some beautiful songs in it.

It's a shame there aren't many good videos of them on youtube yet, but the album version of this song is really beautiful:

      Black Submarine - Lover

The song they have an official video for (Here So Rain) is precisely the one I like the least :D

There's also this one, which I like, but isn't really reflective of the rest of the album... it's very different to the other songs:

      Black Submarine - 'Black Submarine'

Isn't that Davide Rossi of Goldfrapp and Coldplay fame too? Great violinist who also worked with McCabe and Jones on The Verve's Forth.

The Style Council - "Speak Like A Child"

Just listened to this great tune.

      It's him indeed!

I'm listening to some Brazilian classics tonight, such as Mutantes. One of their most famous songs has an English version:

Os Mutantes - Panis et Circenses (english version)

They've influenced quite a lot of people, even outside Brazil. Kurt Cobain was admittedly a fan.

U2 - Mothers of the Disappeared

'Midnight our sons and daughters taken from us
      Hear their hearts beat.'

U2 wrote a lot of songs on suffering and politics in the 80s like Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Years Day but perhaps none of them as hard hitting as this one. The 'Mothers of the Disappeared' are those mums who saw their children taken and killed by the military dictatorships that ruled most prominently in Argentina (title inspired by the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo) and Chile in the 70s and 80s for daring to oppose their horrible regimes. It should be one of their most well known songs but it isn't. Amazing song to finish off an amazing album!
