Just got out from watching Rogue One.

      That final act.

      Wow!!

I give it 7/10. But the scene with Vader at the end saved it for me. I think I hyped it too much in my own mind.

CGI I thought was well executed except for the very end scene.

My top five probably would be:

      1. Arrival
      2. The Revenant
      3. The Jungle Book
      4. Room
      5. Zootropolis

Agree with all your disappointments though.

      My surprise of the year:

      The Nice Guys.

Plan to watch Nice Guys over xmas looking forward to it.

Can't wait for Shane Blacks Predator sequel next year!

RIP Carrie, someone who I admired for living life on the edge, and for pretty much being a one off ...

      Possibly Tom Hanks best performance.

Ive only seen that movie once, hated the ending.

And I'd argue that his performance in Forrest Gump was better even though for much of Castaway his costar was a volleyball.  Just my opinion.

No way is his performance in Forrest Gump better.

I think for an actor to make you fell sorry for him for losing a volleyball who was his closest 'friend' was outstanding.

If you had said Philadelphia then maybe but not Gump for me.

Just watching Casino again for the first time in ages.

I knew De Niro was great in this but forgot how great.

And Sharon Stone possibly gave her best ever performance here.

Didn't plan on watching it but flicked past and it was on.

Never a chance I was going to change channel again though.

I got rid of Virgin TV earlier this month and got me a Kodi box, and thats the first film I watched on it! Everyone on that film could have been nominated for best actor, bloody brilliant film that doesnt get the credit it deserves. Of course having a Kodi box I went on to watch Goodfellas, Untouchables and Carlitos Way!

      Yeah, I love gangster films!

If you love gangster movies make sure and watch Donnie Brasco if you haven't already.

Underrated and Al Pacino gives a great low key performance in this.

If you have the time add Sam Mendes Road To Perdition as well.

Another under rated gangster film based around the Irish Mob and Tom Hanks in another great role.

Worth seeing for the cinematography alone.

      No problem.

It should be mentioned in any discussion about great gangster films but isn't and should be.

Let me know what you think.

I agree. I never tire of watching Castaway and his performance. Maybe it's just the idea of just viewer and actor in the company of each other for a good chunk of the film that makes it work - I mean who wouldn't want to be stuck on a desert island with Tom Hanks even if he does go close to losing his mind and tries to take his life! Such great acting especially the bit mentioned where he loses the volleyball.

I like Forrest Gump but it's way down in my list of Tom Hanks films. Will need to see it again though. Saw Captain Phillips between Christmas and New Year and that is 10 times the performance of Forrest! And that's not even counting the films where he was more a support actor like Catch Me If You Can and Bridge Of Spies - both equally brilliant and underrated Spielberg yarns.

Worth listening to his Desert Island Discs episode from last year. Great listen.

      Agree.

I'm a big fan of Hanks and if you haven't already I mentioned Road To Perdition above which along with being one of the most beautifully shot films I've seen is another great Hanks performance.

Yeah mentioned it earlier in the thread when I watched it a few weeks back. First time I'd seen it and it was brilliant. Would love to see it on the big screen (similar to Lawrence of Arabia) where the payoff is probably even greater.

This is absolutely incredible but it just occurred to me remembering the film that it had a very Edward Hopper feel to it - obviously the indoor dark/light scenes but also the scenes where they were driving out in the flat countryside and the old couple's country house which drove me to search on google to see if there was any connection. I'm no way an art or cinema expert at all (FAR far from it) but it really goes to show how perfect they got it with that film. Just found this online article that claims that the director used it as a source of inspiration!

edit: Talking of cinematography - also watched Dances With Wolves over Christmas. Breathtaking images of the frontier!

Arrival: Found this okay. Nowhere near the hype it was supposed to be.

Moonlight: Again highly rated, but I wished I'd given this one a swerve too. Went nowhere.

Girl With All the Gifts: Obviously doesn't compare with the book. okay.

Girl on the Train: Worth a watch.

Morgan: Bit of a B grade but if you have an hour and a half to kill it's a good time filler.

      Patriots' Day: Good movie.
