Steven Gerrard signs big-money deal to stay at Anfield

      By staff writers
      July 09, 2009

Steven Gerrard has committed himself to Liverpool, signing a new $50 million four-year contract with the Anfield club.

The midfielder agreed terms months ago on the deal, reported to be worth $250,000 per week, but finally signed the contract this week after returning from his summer break.

The club captain had previously said that his next contract will be his last and he will then retire. His new deal is set to expire in 2013 when he will be 33.

Dont Know if this should be a new topic all together.

$ 250,000.00/Week is a dream! He is totally worth it.

It seems to be an anti climax as we have known for a while that he was going to sign an extension to his contract.Having said that it is still good news that Stevie is totally committed to the club.

      The Telegraph
Liverpool's Steven Gerrard puts pen to paper on new contract
Steven Gerrard has offically put pen to paper on a contract extension that will keep him at Anfield for the rest of his career.

The Liverpool captain agreed two years on top of his current deal - which ran for another two seasons - back in April.

And now, having returned for pre-season training after being given extra days off following his commitments with England, he has finally made it official by signing a contract until 2013, worth a reported £26 million in total.

Gerrard has said this will likely be his last deal and is considering retirement after it expires, when he will be 33.

The news of Gerrard's signature will come as a further huge boost to manager Rafa Benitez, who had already tied down Yossi Benayoun to an improved four-year contract earlier this week.

Benitez will now push ahead with contract paperwork for Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and Daniel Agger, who have all agreed to extend their current Liverpool deals.

The Spaniard will also sit down with Javier Mascherano and urge the Argentine to ignore pleas from Barcelona for him to swap Anfield for the Nou Camp.

Barca have been linked with moves for Mascherano and Cesc Fabregas and Lionel Messi has been very vocal in encouraging Mascherano to join him in Spain.

Messi said: "I hope Mascherano can come and we can form a solid partnership. His qualities are always appreciated. The same goes for Fabregas. A good footballer like him who can contribute is always welcome."

Benitez has maintained that he will not consider offloading Mascherano to Barcelona, but reports suggest his agent, Walter Tamer, has been contacted by the Spanish champions.

      http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/liverpool/5784617/Liverpools-Steven-Gerrard-puts-pen-to-paper-on-new-contract.html

When it is eventually confirmed this will be excellent news.  But I don't think Steven Gerrard (even though he said it) will retire when he's 33.  I reckon he'll do a U-turn and carry on for another 2 - 3 years.

      Fantastic.

It seems like all our key players are going to sign contract extensions this summer - could this be another message for Alonso and Mascherano too?

Surely when they see the quality of players who are pledging their future to us, it'll make them see sense?

      Hats off for our captain.

He's living the dream of every Liverpool lad. One club man who has supported, played for and captained his beloved boyhood team.

Gerrard is going be tied down for the next four years, by then he'll be 33 and I think he stated before that that will be his last contract.

I am very happy for him and very optimistic for the future of Liverpool, with Gerrard in the team anything can happen to change the game. We are indeed blessed to have a local lad like him, sometimes we take him just too granted.

Sell him Rafa he's over rated   :f_tongueincheek: (joke)..... No its very good news for the club that some one of his stature and importance to this club has whole heartedly committed himself to his boyhood club for the rest of his playing career as a football fan other than a Liverpool fan and not letting my judgment bias it but Gerrard for me has to be the most complete Midfielder in the world without doubt he may not have the silky skills of Messi etc but when you stand by them side by side and compare there attributes Gerrard is miles ahead of any one IMO. Well done Stevie You'll Never Walk Alone.

What a contract! And it surely fits our captain marvel. 250k per week is nothing compared to what he had given us past couple of season. A champions league cup and some more silverware, man 250k ain't enough for this immense talent!

I agree with you there, ther's no midfielder more complete than Gerrard, he doesn't really have a weakness to his game. But it always seems to be the more flash players who are more critically acclaimed and they're the ones who seem to win the individual awards which is slightly frustrating. The likes of Ronaldo,Ronaldinho,Messi and Kaka for example.Gerrard doesn't even seem to be considered, I hope he gets one before he retires.

      Boss Delighted With Gerrard Deal
      Jimmy Rice 09 July 2009

Rafa Benitez has spoken of his pleasure after Steven Gerrard put pen to paper on a two-year contract extension.
The skipper agreed a deal back in April to stay at Anfield until at least 2013 - and he signed on the dotted line after returning to training this week.

Benitez said: "We have spent this summer trying to secure the players we have.

"It's really good to keep Kuyt, Torres, Agger, Benayoun and Steven. They are the here and now of the club and for the future it is really good.

"We are really pleased. We have a lot of good players who want to stay, to win and compete. The message has to be the same again this year - to be there, to be contenders and to fight. If we can win trophies it would be fantastic."

A very happy man today to see Johnson's unveiling, as well as Gerrard signing on the dotted line. Tying him up alone will bring confidence up sky-high, boost the squad morale as well. It's more than just him staying, it makes the lads think that they still will team up with the planet's best player for the next four years.

No doubt Gerrard will bring the team into the new season in top shape, leading the team in its most important season ever in the title race. Gerrard is the heartbeat of our team, sometimes we look clueless without him, having to fight to the teeth without him etc. But again we've showed we can cope with the absence of Gerrard. But once Gerrard is in the team then it's much, much better.

Top player in the world, all rounded ability without a shadow of the doubt.

I had a feeling a lot of things would come out today because of the unveiling of Johnson and the availability of Rafa to pass comment on certain things and what Rafa has done is allayed fears of the fans regarding Masch & Alonso gave every one Good News regarding Gerrards contract and Unveiled a quality player to help take us on that little further.

Can this man do any wrong ?, He could fall in a bucket of sh*t and come out smelling of roses well Done Rafa
