Police investigating after Liverpool fans 'pelted with coins' during Man City clash
A number of fans reported missiles being launched into the away end at the Etihad StadiumPolice are investigating after claims Liverpool fans were pelted with coins during last night's top of the table Premier League clash with Manchester City.
A number of Reds fans have reported that coins were thrown at them by home fans at the Etihad Stadium as Liverpool lost out to title rivals City.
Greater Manchester Police have today said they will be investigating the reports.
One LFC fan explained what he said he experienced in the away end during last night's match, which the home side won 2-1.
He said: "It's absolutely mad that people can have such anger towards somebody else over a team they support they feel the need to throw coins.
"I genuinely can't get my head around that mentality because it's just a game at the end of the day.
"They are throwing a metal object into a section of fans that has kids in.
"Imagine if it was to hit a kid in the eye? Things like that can be life changing and shouldn't be going on in football grounds."
The fan also claimed that stewards at the ground were notified of the issue but failed to act.
He said: "What is just as annoying is the lack of care the stewards were showing.
"My seat was on an aisle and the first coin I spotted getting thrown over I said to a steward 'Are you onto that? They are throwing coins'.
"His response initially was that he couldn't hear me and then he said he was sure they "will be taking a look".
"Another instance was when a coin hit somebody I was with on the shoulder. I mentioned it to a different steward and he told me to calm down. I then mentioned it again and he said he would go and speak to somebody. He didn't."
Another Liverpool fan who was at the match, Ayaz Duad, tweeted: "Them Man City fans were horrible throwing coins and bottles at us in our end." He told the ECHO that coins were thrown around the time of both Man City goals. He added: "We got coins thrown at us and bottles - also a flare was thrown into our end and someone threw it back."
The ECHO has seen correspondence today in which Greater Manchester Police has confirmed it has received reports of coins being thrown and says it is now investigating.
Manchester City and Greater Manchester Police have been approached for comment.
