Terrible race further underlining the tragedy of cars doing economy/preservation runs to save their tyres and engines. This is what you get if you limit the number of engines you can use per season only getting to maximise the ability of the engine for a few laps in the Grand Prix.

Still - Vettel did a grand job and was a deserving winner. Hamilton not so. Thoroughly outperformed by Bottas this weekend - there was more pace/better stability in that Mercedes and Lewis didn't do the job this weekend sadly. Must do better in France and Seb deservedly leads the championship.

Massive anti climax to what looked like a classic on paper. Totally agree with you Frankly. Think Hamilton left his hammer at home this week as he looked very average throughout the week. On a positive side with 1 point separation the top two we're in for a exciting two months.

Hamilton should have had a new engine but they fu**ed it up so his engine is now 7 races old and losing power.
He had to basically nurse it all weekend and wasn't able to turn the dial up to 10 when required .
If they cant make a race if it in Canada then they need to think again even Max looked sedate this weekend.

Hamilton walked it the last two years as he usually does there, but there was no complaints about how boring they were  and they weren't great either. It's a long way from the 2011 race when Button went from last to a win on the last lap, with the race taking 4.5 hours to actually finish.

Years ago, if you went off at Casino hairpin in Montreal, your race was done. Now, it's just another run off road and your race goes on. It's difficult to respect many of the drivers today the way they used to, too many risk averse drivers around wanting safety cars for every incident, demanding red flags for rain affected races/sessions, halos and run off areas to sanitise the tracks and lessen the challenge, that earlier drivers just got on with in all conditions and obstacles. That's what Formula 1 is supposed to be.

Yeah there were no complaints because I and others on here thought it was quite an enjoyable race last season.

That's not down to the driver though. If they had it their way it would still be the same. The powers that be bring all the legislation, safety issues into play that can take some of the excitement away.

Yeah - I think the drivers get blamed for a lot of things that aren't of their doing in this sport. We're blessed with a wonderfully talented field of drivers many with exciting futures ahead of them.

Also given that the hairpin in Montreal is so tight and so time consuming if you get it wrong, even if drivers go off there and come back on it still pretty much ruins their race particularly if they're running in a close battle. I've never thought a wall there would improve the spectacle.

So Red Bull have made the switch to Honda for next season.

I think this season has shown the Honda engine wasn't as poor as McLaren would have us believe and I think this could be a good move for Red Bull.

      Thoughts?

You don't become a sh*t engine overnight which was being said about Honda, McLaren need to get their house in order & the sacking of Whitmarsh, the Ferrari scandal, dropping Merc as a engine supplier were all poorly & hastily taken decision  & Ron Dennis being a proper n*b have seen the team regress...

Honda & RedBull will form a title winning collaboration within the next 2 seasons...RB have all the info on Honda engines through RB's junior team..

I said it last season, when McLaren put it on the doorstep of Honda for the teams failure, that McLaren will have nowhere to hide...

It's interesting that it's a two year deal and I think it is a great one for Red Bull. It gives them the luxury of sampling Honda and find out if they're a worthy partner before launching into the 2021 era and and all its vast technical changes that will come with it. I'm sure during those next two years they'll request that Honda develop them an engine that is the class of the field from 2021 onwards. Alternatively during that time they could sound out other partners who may look to come into f1 with the new proposed changes. Either way, I think they're well placed for the 2021 season and have probably stolen a march on their rivals on that basis.

I think Honda showed progression in their second season with McLaren (2016) after their disastrous first season but they shot themselves in the foot when they decided to go back to square one by completely redesigning their power unit, Honda even admitting themselves that it was a high risk strrategy. So in that respect I thought McLaren were badly let down last year and what they became was basically a test vehicle to sort out Honda's problems of which they've progressed and rectified this season, to the benefit of Toro Rosso and Red Bull.

That's not me excusing McLaren though. Even before Honda joined up with them in 2015 they were by far the worst Mercedes powered team on a grid and a season where Mercedes power unit advantage was at its strongest (so much that Williams were regular podium scorers...and probably should have won a race!). That says a lot about the faulty design process that has been operating within McLaren for years. I read John Barnard's comments today on Sky about how McLaren's technical setup was based on how the aerospace industry works, design by committee in effect, in that the structure implemented at McLaren could, in theory, easily sustain itself and not be impacted if and when key personnel left the organisation.

I recently bought Adrian Newey's autobiography 'How To Build A Car' (I couldn't recommend this book highly enough - one of, if not the best f1 book I've ever read) and he said the exact same thing to the point where he was being overruled on major decisions regarding the design and build of cars by a 'committee' or as they call them at McLaren 'mullahs'. Sure enough, during Newey's latter seasons at McLaren they were never that successful and far from operating a system that would ensure stability and regular success at McLaren, the system has only served to restrict and curb genius and innovation in the team. To any observer of F1, casual or die hard, success in F1 is build on individual brilliance on the track and off it. Develop a system that doesn't lessen the importance of individuals. Create one that allows them to flourish - McLaren should refer to Ross Brawn's methods in that respect!

What an absolutely horrific showing by McLaren. In the absolute pits (no pun intended) - this is Hodgson at Liverpool levels of direness! Given the rumours that they are chasing Ricciardo (good luck with that) that might also suggest Alonso has made his mind up and will exit the sport at the end of their year. Heads will roll. Tim Goss was the first and certainly won't be the last.

I think Fernando is definitely off mate.

Danny would be taking a huge risk leaving Red Bull for McLaren at this stage.

They actually made quite a positive start to the season, looked like there was glimmer of hope for them. Now though, they’ve become just as pathetic and embarrassing as last year. Really can’t see Alonso staying with them beyond this season, thought that last year but this year he just seems to have given up, he’s gone from saying how they will soon improve as the season goes on to not saying it and basically saying they need to get a grip and stop with the bullshit like chasing down 4th/5th over the radio.
