Rafa promised more funds after new Sponsorship deal
      Sep 15, 2009 05:20:52 pm
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has been promised a bigger transfer kitty next season as a result of the club's new sponsorship deal.

The Reds have announced a record £80 million, four-year sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered Bank which will come into place next season.

Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow has confirmed the deal will enable the club to offer Benitez more transfer funds next summer.

"The fans will ask, of course, whether the money will stay within the club and they'll be pleased to know the revenue, profits and income is the club's," said Purslow.

"It stays in the club, and our job is to support the team so we'll invest a sensible amount in our wage bill and a sensible level of profits in our transfers.

"As you drive your revenues forward, you try to generate profits and those profits will be used to invest in the future of the club, which, in football speak, often means buying players.

"From next summer, one of our key (income) lines, the revenue line, will be substantially increased as a function of this commercial agreement, so a normal ratio of that will go to the wage bill and my ability to support Rafa in the transfer market will be hugely enhanced.

"We want to be the best football team in the world and there is a pretty clear link between that and having the best performance off the field."

What was that line out of that Gabrielle song

      "Dreams can come true!"

From next season as well, which means that if we still need back-up in January we'll still have to wait.

Wouldn't go making promises you can't keep Purslow or you will soon be along side the owners and Parry in the hating rank because we all know Rafa will be given no more support than he was this summer.

Gut feeling too little too late.

When a club is paying out £40M in interest alone then it can only tinker with a transfer budget.

THIS was the summer that we needed to steal a march on our rivals.  I'd imagine by next summer Fergie will have identified players to spend his £80M Ronaldo money on and we will, again, be playing catch up.

Give Rafa the money in January.

I've got this gut feeling about David Villa and there could be a bidding scenario with manUre and ourselves, it's documented that Whiskey face would like to sign him out of spite if nothing else while Mr Benitez is an ardent admirer of the lads sublime talents. With our anticipated backers in the wings and the mancs having a greater debt issue than LFC it could make for an optimistic end game.

I'm with you on this to be honest.  Too little too late.  I'm gutted that the dynamic duo screwed Rafa over this summer's transfer window.

From the financial future thread in 'The Albert', I think the figures already start to suggest that in order to reduce debt our transfer budget will be affected.

That is going to be the case for many seasons as long as the Yanks are still here.
