Upgrading PS3 hard drive

Had a look on Play.com for 320Gb to 500Gb hard drives compatible with PS3's.

Very very pleased with the price range (around £40-£70, ish) and now definitely looking to do this with birtjday money/the next few weeks wages.

Anyone else done this? There's a few comments on there that people have done this and stored stuff on there and also installed the Linus OS to make it into a better computer too.

I did it.

I put a 160Gb or something in.

Although to be completely honest - what are you going to use your super enormous hard drive for? Because mine's probably less full than when I had the original 60Gb drive in there.

Yeah I used the backup tool on the PS3 itself to a 40gb external HDD I had. then put it back when I installed the new one

I roughly have 200gb left from 320gb Movies, Music, Photo's, game saves etc...

It's literally so I don't have to delete games when I get more and to have enough room for demo's/videos/mp3s, etc.

Plus mine's only a measly 40Gb, which is full. Got bumped when I bought it in all honesty.

I'll have to lend one, or hope the 20Gb HDD (MP3 Jukebox ) will fit want I want to swap over on.

Game save files shouldn't take up much. I could just re-download the games I have saved when I get the new one. Maybe?

^ Yeah - thinking back, that's what I did. Threw it on to one of those iPod Classics. 

^ And yeah you can redownload purchased games.

They are just sata hard drives, you can pick them up cheapily enough on ebay

you can transfer to the older ipods (for some reason the new ones done work) you only need to transfer game saves really, as mines was a 60Gb I just copied onto a 4Gb SD Card, easy enough, just a pain in the ass re installing everything/downloading the updates again!

One thing to remember tho is make a note of your user name email addresses and passwords, as I had more than 1 user ID i forgot what email address I used so I lost that ID

Game saves will be a given. I have some saved games but a couple are off mates (we all know the trick :) so I'll have to go around them if any of them disappear.

I'll use the 20Gb Jukebox and hope to God it doesn't decide to turn itself off like it started doing when I was still using it. It even uses the same connection as the PS3 controllers so I can just use the USB leads off it. Bargain!

I think they're applied to your online profile as far as I can tell.

I formatted my old hard drive, though i can't remember exactly how i did it. Only thing i remember is that you need to use a program called 'Swiss Knife'. So start by downloading that.

Windows 7 wont format external HDD's within computer managment so go into start type cmd then type format /FS:FAT32 X: change the X to your drive letter.

I think it wont format anything over 30gb either so make a partition.
