I can see why Rafa had to take Torres off but I see the other side of it. It happened at Fulham and it happened again today. Torres comes off and the other side get a leg up for some reason. For some reason it puts an extra wind in their sails. They start attacking us more, knowing that if they get countered there's no Torres waiting to pounce.

I appreciate that's sometimes what can happen but I don't think it happened here.

We scored in the 84th minute.  We were trying to hold on and Lyon woke up a bit because they needed a draw.  I don't think Torres trotting around the pitch would have helped much.

It was just classic signs of a team with low confidence panicking trying to protect a slim late lead.

What about if we beat Debrecen 4-0 or something. That way, if Lyon draw with Fiorentina, we would only need to win 2-0 or 1-0 or something.

Quite pleased to see nobody having a go at the ref.

I thought he didn't pick on Carra at all in the first half.  :f_whistle:

Ha! He was a bellend wasn't he.  He was awful.  I think I was desensitised to how bad he was after about 15 minutes so I forgot about him.

Proper pedantic European ref that was.

If two teams end up on the same points then it goes on the results between the two clubs. And then goal difference.  Fiorentina beat us 2-0 and have a better goal difference. So we would need to beat them by 3 goals.

It goes on head to head scores in the Champion's League before overall goal difference.

      Beat Fiorentina  4-0
      Beat Debrecen  3-0

Lyon get a draw at Fiorentina and we are sorted.

I'm still not giving up until its completely over.

If they draw, minimum win for us would be 3-0 or we have to go 4-1, 5-2 and etc.

      JD,
Right, Torres going out wouldn't have helped much. Exactly like that decision to take off Torres was criticised when we conceded a late goal to Everton in the league last season.

      Am Gutted !!
It was a Bridge to Far (excuse the film pun)..
Rafa nor the team he fielded can be faulted for their commitment.
Is Rafa the manager to still be at the helm? That a discussion for another time.
All I will say about this evening match is we gave 100% and that's all we can ask.

That trophy was good enough to be our first ever European trophy sooooooooooo............ ..................

Plus Hamburg for the final, more tickets for fans and hopefully we beat the blueshite on the way, in fact I'd love them in the semi's.

      Everyone would be interested then!

We've missed the trips to towns who sound like they've got boss lager though.

It's all either well know European places or f*cking Goodison now. :D

I can see Gerrard having surgery.

Whisper it quietly but I don't think Lucas deserves dropping on present form.  He may play Aquilani behind Torres.

Great point that JD. Would be very hard to drop him the way he's playing lately.

Been sick as a dog today, 3pm here and only just woke up proper. From reading through it seems we actually played well but yet had luck go against us YET again. Beach balls, greeks, always something eh. I can't really say much else on the game, although it seems Babel actually had a good one which is shocking, but good. Won't get any hopes up about him getting better, as the key with Babel is he never shows consistency. But good on him anyways. Otherwise, if i am correct i do believe we are basically in the same position as far as points go as we were in '07. So it is far from over, but we need to rely on others AND switch up a gear ourselves. It can be done, and hopefully the players will see we played well, and that we just need to step it up a little more to get what we want. Bring on Birmingham on monday!
I may have missed it in reading somewhere but did Aquilani make an appearance?

No mate Aquilani didn't get on,that's my only disappointment apart from the result of course.I've got to say how impressed I am with the tone of the post match comments on here. It's what I would have expected from true Redmen, not a knee jerker in sight.Well in boys and girls, now i'm certain that it's onwards and upwards.I'm sure the support for Rafa and the team on monday, will be truly "Liverpool immense".This is what makes us proud to be a Red.

Despite how gutting the result is, and how undeserved their goal was - we can't be left too disheartened by tonight.

That was not our full strength team, at all tonight. No Johnson, Carra at right back. No Gerrard. May be argued that Aurelio would've started tonight instead of Insua based on current form also. Torres was there, but he wasn't really there due to his fitness.

Result aside, our performance was on the whole quite good. We dominated play, set the tone of the game and asked all the questions. Unlucky for us Lloris made some decent saves for Lyon tonight, he looks a very good goalkeeper actually. I thought Mascherano and Lucas, yes Lucas, were top tonight. The Lyon central midfielders hardly got a look in and considering they line-up with three players across the middle that's quite something.

I don't think we were going to get much luck against Cissokho - that lad is a player. Really liked him at Porto and he's looking just as good at Lyon. Great strength, pace and is able to both defend and be dangerous on the attack. Benayoun up against him in my opinion was a bit of a mismatch and we may have been better starting Yossi either on the right or through the middle, which brings me onto the largest negative.

Voronin. I'm sorry, but what on Earth was he doing on the field tonight. He is appaling, I really don't have anything good to say about the man. He's been given so many chances yet he's still to do anything. His chance - it was by no means a tap in, but it was a brilliant opportunity and top strikers would be burying that. It was strange that I was begging for Babel to be brought on for him despite having almost as little confidence in him. What a goal though. What a goal. Jumped out of my seat and shouted "It's about F***ing time!"... then he went back to his usual self like I've noticed others have mentioned.

Still trying to work out how we didn't get the 3 points, and I'm finding it extremely difficult, but what I would say is this - our finishing needs to improve. It's pretty poor when you only have confidence in a few players to finish their chances. We had some really decent chances tonight, and they just weren't taken. Babel's goal was just a moment of brilliance but you can look to Voronin, Lucas, Kuyt, Torres and Babel again - they all had half chances but just didn't take them.

The only thing we can do now is simply believe. We need to win these next two games in the group, preferably comfortably and see what happens. If we go through, then that's F***ing fantastic, but if not, to be honest we can't exactly complain. Poor results against Lyon and Fiorentina will be what have cost us. If we do go out, I would have no complaints if we went on and won the Europa League, hey I know it's not the CL but I'm not sure what's better if you were given the option: a very hypothetical question - would you prefer to go out in the knockout stages of the CL or win the Europa League?

Carra looked absolutely gutted in the post-match interview and who can blame him. However once again he was not himself tonight. I know he was playing at right-back, and the referee was a bit of a tosser, but I just feel slightly uncomfortable watching him nowadays. I hope that's going to change.

Anyway, let's take the positives, carry the performance into the next game against Birmingham and hopefully there we will finish our chances!

      Keep positive all!

It was a really good performance bearing in mind the players playing out of position (Carra @ RB which he hates)injured and confidence levels low.  Still hoping for a miracle and some more brilliance from returning key players over the next few weeks!?

its not the end of the world, however i feel there seems to be an over dependance on the whole "we've done it before" when it comes to sticky situations in Europe. I mean yeah the 07/08 season 3 wins on the trot and the unforgetable Istanbul win were amazing but we cant just keep expecting to do it over and over and especially without key players who were the ones in these situations who got the rest of the team going (Gerrard, Alsonso etc).

However with players coming back to full fitness in the next few weeks hopefully we can get some influentual players playing and play with a much more spiritied performance like we did tonight, and hopefully get a bit more luck! Despite all ive said above a bit of blind faith wont hurt!!

Yep it was Dreem in '97 Labour used it in its election campaign so lets not use it now (bearing in mind Labour's current standing) COME ON REDS...hate seeing Chavs and Mancs doing ok, If we keep performances at the right temps we can get some wins in the league now.

I'd like to know what his arms are made of.  In the first game he saved Aurelio's header with an outstreched arm and tonight he did the same with a Lucas shot, and both times his arm was like a rock.  Has he got titanium implants or something?

Personally don't give a f*ck about modern right wing Labour, Kinnock and Prescott are tossers.I'm Socialist Labour and the only thing I care about is LFC.So as our unprecedented injury problems clear up,things can only get better as far as I'm concerned.

After all the losses it seems good enough reason to me :D Though im sick so tinnies may be a bad choice.

It was a step in the right direction tonight from all accounts im seeing, a real stroke of bad luck is all that kept us from 3 points. So lets take the good from the game and hope to build, like i said, bring on Birmingham!
