      How do you say it?! Languages and Colloquisms
      May 07, 2007 04:49:40 pm
      Hello peeps! Like me wanna know how you say tings in a different language innit!

      We have many different cultures and tongues amongst us so it would be interesting to find out different phrases, sayings and learn some dialect from a different place.

      I guess a main participant in this topic will be Nicola from Cardiff in South Wales.
      This 1st post should suit her, see if ya can say this then!

      Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

      Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgoge rychwyrndrobwllllantysil iogogogoch), also spelt Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll and commonly known as Llanfair PG or Llanfairpwll, is a village and community on the island of Anglesey in Wales, situated on the Menai Strait next to Menai Bridge and across the strait from Bangor. According to the 2001 census, the population of the community is 3,040,[1] 76% of whom speak Welsh fluently; the highest percentage of speakers is in the 10–14 age group, where 97.1% are able to speak Welsh.

      The long form of the name is the longest officially recognised place name in the United Kingdom and one of the longest in the world, being 58 letters in length (51 letters in the Welsh alphabet, where "ch" and "ll" count as single letters).

      The name is Welsh for
      "St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near to the rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave"

      My mother and her mother are Welsh. They were born in St. Asaph, North Wales
      (the same place where the legendry Ian Rush was born).
      My sister and family lives in Rhyl, (N.E Wales)
      My Mum lives in Colwyn Bay, (Middle of the N.Wales coast)

      My father and his father and all my Dads' side are Scouse.
      Liverpool is my home from home, always has been, always will be, la!

      I can say that easy peasy :D I didn't know that's what it was translated to cos it's old fashioned welsh! So thanks for that ;)
      I just listened to that on my housemate's computer, and that guy says it a bit funny. He seems to miss out the "gyl lgogerych" bit ??? And I think he's a proper Gog too, so says it a bit differently to me.
      My housemates make fun of the way I pronounce most words to be fair, the main ones are "serious", "lush", "here" (sounds like yurrr) and James (my housemate) loves how us Welshies (well, mainly taffys) say "brilliant" and now it's got into my vocabulary.. eek!
      :P
      This topic is brilliant I love it hehe.

      Good topic RED!!

      I feel as though I can't really add much to it though, becuase I'm a scouser and maybe the majority of people on here could be scousers. And we all know how scousers talk.
      But it'll be interesting to see what the "foreigners" have to say  ;D :D

      Is right! Boss!

      "Oh no I friggin won't!"
      Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah! And what d'you know 'bout it aye?
      "More than you do dick'ead!"
       :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

      A couple of years ago I was taking my girlfriend and her daughter (6) to Liverpool for the first time.
      I said to the little one "To become an honorary Scouser you must learn the phrase Dey Do Doh Don't Dey Doh?"
      She practised for ages in the car on the way up (to the point of tedium!)
      She fell asleep late on then suddenley woke up and said in her sleep "Dey Do Doh Don't Dey Doh?". It was a funny moment.
      I actually took her to Anfield on the morning of my Aunties' wedding and we did a stadium tour and saw Big Ears no.5 (I know my priorities!)
      Here's a few words to learn for anyone with no Scouse ancestry:

      Hay - Excuse me.     Dat - That.     Day - They     Dares - There is.     Cuum Edd - Come along now.

           Soff Ladd - Idiot / Fool     D Aussie - The Hospital.     D Foot E - The Football Match.

      On D Bev E - Taking Alcoholic Beverages.     Oarl Rite Mayt - Hello There, How are you.     D Soash - The Social Security Office.

      Me Owl Feller - My Father.     Ya Skall E - You Bounder.     Mayd Up Me - I'm rather pleased.

      Yeh, the bunad is our national costume. I got the trønder one, cause Im from Trondheim. Each region/county got their own bunad. If I had a picture of me in mine Id show you, tho mine is not that fancy. Go down south and southwest in Norway and some of the bunads are just crazy beautiful. Lots of embroideries and stuff, really cool. Mine got none hehe, but its still nice I think, and Im proud to be a trønder  ;D

      Icecream IS compulsory when you celebrate 17.mai! Icecream and hotdogs! hehe  ;D
      Was the best day! Just having a break from examstress and reading, looking at the parades downtown and all the cute kids in their tiny tiny bunads ;) meeting up with family and enjoying a beer in the sun with my boyfriend. Just lovely.

      I just tracked down a website for camping in Snowdonia. I was hunting for a particular campsite I stayed at in 1993/4 I think. The occasion was the 33rd Dragon Rally, a bikers event. It was bitterly cold in January and an experience I'll never forget. But to the point of the topic... I found this link which Nicola should scrutinize and give it the thumbs up / down! :gt-happyup:

      What's scrutinize?
      Hehe that's quite funny!! How did you find that ?! L-o-l.
      Some of the things, like "sut mae?" you don't really say, normally "sut wyt ti" or "sut dach chi" (which is on the site). and "prynhawn da" is good afternoon properly, hehe, "p'nawn da" is slang! I speak Wenglish mostly anyways.
      "do", "yndw" and "yndi" are more gog things to say, North Wales like, so near Snowdonia yeh :) Hehe.
      I found this site, you guys won't really get it, but it's Welsh signs all spelt or translated wrong, some are small mistakes, but some are just pathetic.. like someone's used a dictionary to translate each word.. which you can not do with Welsh!
      Here it is if you wanna look: http://www.flickr.com/groups/scymraeg/pool/

      Anyway was at me dad's today for the Sunday Roast and dad was fumin over a "jigger" which is apparently an entry or alley way.

      "runnin round" - going to somehwere (e.g. I'm just runnin round to our Micks, be back in a bit)
      "biddy" - for an old women (e.g. don't be sly lad, go and help that old biddy out)
      "sly" - being a tightarse (e.g. go 'ed lend us a tenner, don't be sly)
      "go ed" - go on (e.g. go 'ed Torres on your own lad)
      "leg it" - run fast away from something (e.g. here's Charlie, leg it)
      "peg it" - same as leg it
      "bagsy" - ownership of something. (e.g. bagsy the seat furthest away from the door)

      Just wanted to bring up the use of the saying 'seen my arse'.

      Does anyone know where it came from and what the hell it means?

      I've moved to Portsmouth from near Chester where the saying is used all the time, upon moving down here no one has ever heard of this saying! So maybe its something we just say in the Chester area?

      So I was just wondering if anyone else uses 'seen my arse' in thier everyday dialogue and also where they live

      Cheers

      Some Cantonese for you:-

      Ling  = 0
      Yat = 1
      Yi   = 2
      Sam = 3
      Say = 4
      Ng  = 5
      Luk = 6
      Chat = 7
      Baht = 8
      Gau = 9
      Sap = 10

      anything over ten is multiples of 'Sap' followed by the units eg:- 'Say sap sam' would be 43

      'Mmm Goy' = thank you (for a service, waiter etc)
      Dor jeh = thank you for a gift
      Jo San = Good morning
      Joy geen = good evening
      Nei ho ma? = how are you?
      Gei ho, Nei Nei = very well, and you?
      Lei sik, mm sik, gong gwong dung wa?...... do you speak cantonese?
      Lei sik, mm sik, gong ying man?........ do you speak English?
      Hai = yes
      Mm hai = no
      Gei do cheen?= How much?

      However I must point out that Cantonese is very much a tonal language, so its not so much what you say but HOW you say it....

      'Gau' can mean 9, shoes or Crab depending on which tones you use!

      Also the syntax in spoken Cantonese is nothing like we would use in sentances in English, there are classifiers for certain objects and you never seem to ask a direct question but provide the negative within the question?..... as in 'Lei sik, mm sik, gong gwong dung wah?, the literal translation is:.... 'You do, do not, speak Cantonese'...... the 'Mm sik' being the negative....... and people seem to have a habit of adding 'Ah' to the end of every query, as in 'Gei do cheen ah?...... how much?
