Some Cantonese for you:-
Ling = 0
Yat = 1
Yi = 2
Sam = 3
Say = 4
Ng = 5
Luk = 6
Chat = 7
Baht = 8
Gau = 9
Sap = 10
anything over ten is multiples of 'Sap' followed by the units eg:- 'Say sap sam' would be 43
'Mmm Goy' = thank you (for a service, waiter etc)
Dor jeh = thank you for a gift
Jo San = Good morning
Joy geen = good evening
Nei ho ma? = how are you?
Gei ho, Nei Nei = very well, and you?
Lei sik, mm sik, gong gwong dung wa?...... do you speak cantonese?
Lei sik, mm sik, gong ying man?........ do you speak English?
Hai = yes
Mm hai = no
Gei do cheen?= How much?
However I must point out that Cantonese is very much a tonal language, so its not so much what you say but HOW you say it....
'Gau' can mean 9, shoes or Crab depending on which tones you use!
Also the syntax in spoken Cantonese is nothing like we would use in sentances in English, there are classifiers for certain objects and you never seem to ask a direct question but provide the negative within the question?..... as in 'Lei sik, mm sik, gong gwong dung wah?, the literal translation is:.... 'You do, do not, speak Cantonese'...... the 'Mm sik' being the negative....... and people seem to have a habit of adding 'Ah' to the end of every query, as in 'Gei do cheen ah?...... how much?
I'll shut up now that I have confused everyone!
