Who would be your future captain after Gerrard?
      Dec 18, 2009 08:09:08 pm
I heard gerrard speaking about how he dont know how long he has left as captian of the team, can you see him still playing if he isnt? like sami.

I was thinking about this and wondered who would be the replacement? obviously Carragher would be as he is the vice captian but then he is in his advancing years like Sami was when he got replaced, dont think Torres should get the job! maybe Mascherano? or Reina?

Who would you like to see replace Gerrard?

Not sure we should be discussing this when Gerrard has about 3/4/5 years left in him yet.

For me i would like the replacement to be Reina or Mascherano as they both have a never die attitude, also i think Gerrard when getting older could play a more defensive role as captain or not.

I haven't heard this interview and you haven't posted a link or said where you heard it???

Though don't know why you think Torres shouldn't get the armband but Masch should when Masch isn't exactly pushing for a new contract or said anything to end rumours about him leaving, unlike Nando who is constantly saying he wants to stay for a long time.

But anyway, not happening, Gerrard will be captain for a long time yet so pointless topic IMO :-\

There is no player in this team who can replace the Skipper. As long as Steven plays he will remain the Skipper. There is no doubt about that.

Because Torres does not want to have the pressure on him, in Spain once he became captain he said he felt like everything was relying on him and he felt suffocated.

But if Mascherano stays and shows loyalty I think he would be a perfect candidate, Pepe also.

Stevie's gonna be Captain for a few more years yet, but one person that I think could be in the running eventually will be Daniel Agger.

Stevie G has 5 years left in him i think at this level ,his game noticably improved when he became captain and if he should relinquish this position ( Rafa would never take it off him ) he would be a lesser player imo.

I know but I was just saying I can't understand why he would choose Masch over Nando (though it will never be the case).

Anyway if Gerrard was no longer skipper, and Carra wasn't given the job then it would go to Kuyt because when them 2 haven't played it has been Kuyt who was given the armband.

If we were to change, I'd hand it straight to Pepe without question. Has shown the loyalty that I have never seen in a foreign player ever.

But Gerrard will be captain for awhile yet, so it doesn't matter.

Think it would be out of the question for Mascherano. He has temper issues but that goes in line with his game, so I don't think it would help his game adding the responsibility on his shoulders.

It's pretty tough at the moment to think of a player who stands out, because lets face it, there isn't many leaders on our pitch when you take out Gerrard and Carragher.

I'd hate to give Torres the armband as he had it with Atletico and some would say that hampered his game a bit. A player like him has to be free and express himself naturally without thought.

      Very good question this actually.

Possibly Agger like MsG says. That's the only player who springs to my mind at the moment.

      Reina.

Passionate, loves the club, can see the game unfolding in front of him, and has good communication skills. I would also consider him a Scouser so IMO he fits the bill to perfection when Gerrard dies retires.

I would go for Reina,as his passion for the game and for this club would give the rest of the squad something to look up to.He seems to have that never say die attitude which is what we would need after Stevie.

      Martin Kelly.

Due to the fact that Stevie has at least four years left in him by the time he does hang up his boots Kelly should be a regular in this side and ready to take the mantle, hopefully as a centre half.

By the time Gerrard is ready to retire (say at 37), Reina, Agger and Masch would be grown-azz players too.

So look to Lucas or....... LUCAS REALLY

I see a lot of post writing Gerrard off as having only 3-4 seasons left, really?  I know its a grueling schedule, numerous matches with, league, cups, FA, Europe, bit a consensus on here seems only 3-4 seasons left playing?

If he can stay realtively match fit why cant he play for another 6-7 seasons at least.  Naturally he'd slow down a bit , but even a 70% Gerrard is better than most in the league. Maybe the Captains band changes but he can still play for those seasons.

Hes not an OVERLY physical player, he seems to have good conditioning and never had a debilitating Injury. No major surgeries or joint rebuilds. I know he had some Muscle strains, groin and Hamstring but, he still seems young enough to carry the team into 2015-16 campaign.  Maybe play the upcoming WC then hang it up for International like Carragher, concentrate more on Liverpool in the later years.  We know he's retiring a Red, then going to the Club Front Office or maybe Mgr one day. Last season he could take a player/coach position.

Am I overstating his conditioning or Issues.  Am I wrong?

Yeah, Torres would be a good choice. He has captained a team before and has the hang of it.
Otherwise which other option have we got? Maybe Mascherano? He captains Argentina National team after all.

Torres is the most likely choice.

Other than him i see an academy graduate taking up the mantle.

Or just to screw certain folk on here up and because i can i'd go for Lucas ;)

Being the world's best forward, it's already a heavy burden and we're just gonna 'expect' more from him if the arm band is given to Torres.

I'd like to think that Daniel Agger would be a pretty good choice. He hasn't looked as a leader yet but that may change in 3-4 years.

I'm saying Pepe Reina as well.  Gerrard has already touted him as a great candidate to take the armband after him.

His passion is second to none compared to half of these stains that appear to 'play' for Liverpool every week.

The passion Pepe Reina has, especially for a foreign player, is phenomenal. He would be an ideal candidate.

I'd also say Agger would be up there in my own estimations.

Martin Kelly is a shout though. Would like to see that in a few years time.

100% Pepe, he's F***ing great isn't he. Amount of passion and drive for success is unbelievable, and he's pretty vocal on the pitch.

Does anyone else think having your GK as your captain is a little problematic though? He's not exactly in the thick of it the whole time, although with our current defending he would be.

I dont want Torres to be captain because his job is to score goals for us not to organize us on the pitch, Reina would be the ideal replacement the defence would have him barking orders all day long!.

It was a interview i saw on tv so i dont have a link for it but i think gerrard when he gets to his last few years will step down as captain.

      Is. F***ing. Right.

If I was the manager I would install him as captain yesterday.

Martin Kelly is a good shout but that would have to be way down the line. In my opinion he'd have to be playing regularly now in order to take it immediately when Gerrard gives it up. Gerrard was young when he got it but already had a good deal of experience.

For me Pepe is the obvious candidate, plenty of years ahead of him, loved by the fans, loves the club and shows tremendous consistency and leadership on the pitch.

Bit to early for that call i think. I don't think he would be ready to be captain by the time we need a new one anyways. I can see Gerrard giving it up in the next couple years i think, and i would want an experienced head who has shown leadership and loyalty.

      In other words, Pepe Reina.

Worthy candidate, but only if he clears up the injury issues and can forge himself into a week in, week out character like Carra. I think this team has a few good candidates coming through, just will have to see how the team looks when it comes to that time i guess.

Sad that we are starting to talk about Gerrard being replaced, doesn't seem all that long ago he was given the arm band.

Mate we have to look to the future.I personally want another Emlyn Hughes type Captain, and to my mind,Dagger is the obvious choice, but also I like Dany Ayala, probably a natural replacement for Carra in the back four, alongside Dagger.

If only we had another Emlyn Hughes a lot of our problems on the pitch would disappear, sadly there will only ever be one Emlyn.I really cannot recall a more enthusiastic player than the MIGHTY EMLYN HUGHES,may he rest in peace.

Based on the current crop of players, most of you have said either Reina, Agger or Torres.

Torres, although captain of Atletico, shouldn't be the captain. It places a burden on his shoulders and instead of scoring goals on the pitch, he'll be focusing more on organising his team out.

Back at Atletico he was struggling with this weight on his shoulders and was just hitting 20 goals per season. He got the captaincy at Atletico because of the adoration of their fans, but it wasn't an astute move and I wouldn't want him to be installed as captain because it might impact his performances.

Besides, I don't like a captain with his arse facing the players most of the time - how do you lead in this sense?

Don't know why people raised the point of Agger as well. He's one of the most calm and composed defenders but I don't see him leading. His injury problems don't help his cause either.

I'll install Reina without a doubt. He's got many more years left at Liverpool Football Club and is one of the most supportive players in the dressing room. Everytime things ain't going well he'll always throw his full support in. From his angle he's also certainly able to see clearly the other 10 players - basically he's in a good position to lead.

I'll like Kelly as well, he's a local lad and the best thing to happen would be a local lad leading the side out at Anfield. I really hope the gaffer gives him more chances because he looks like a star in the making.

Fernando Torres shouldn't be captain. It will only increase the already heavy burden on him.

Personally, I'd like a player in the centre of the field to lead the team. He can not only have everyone around him but also do his magic moments at the opposite end.

It'll be a while yet before any change of captain (Gerrard will be for some time).  However, 'supposing' that tomorrow, there had to be a change of captain, my thoughts would go to three:
      Carragher - die hard.
      Reina - devoted.
      Torres - is LFC!
I would go with Torres.  He is sometimes a little too backchatty, and gets too carried away with the frustrations of the game - but - he really loves the club, and his presence changes the team instantly.  He is a real spark!  Liverpool Football Club is embodied in him.  He plays with passion, and the other players really respond to him.

Absolutely agree with you. Lucas is a central midfielder who usually gets involved with all the actions on the field, he's usually in a good position to see what's going on around him. He's also always calm, which is a good attitude attributed to a captain.
Definitely one candidate to be a captain after Stevie G.

I saw that. Brilliant man! I hope he never leaves.

Goes to show how F***ing blind ref's are when a keeper is telling him who it was and he was on the other side of the field.
