      This seasons missing player
      Dec 23, 2009 08:12:53 pm
People say how badly we are missimg Alonso since his transfer to Real madrid, while this is true in my opinion' i think we are missing Hyypia even more. Are defence is looking decidedly shakey, but Hyypia new team Bayer Leverkusen are top of the German league. I still belive the bigger loss this season was Hyypia

      Your point being?

Couldn't have been avoided really so there's not much point in talking about it.

Hyypia's gone. We have to deal with it.

It's not like we don't have enough quality in our backline.

But he wasn't a regular last season and started very few matches thus why he wanted to go, Xabi was a regular.

Took the words right out of my mouth mate.

Sami Hyypia was a bit part player last season and was only used when needed. Xabi Alonso was an integral part of our starting XI and was a vital part of the midfield 5 cog.

I agree that we do miss Hyypia's presence but to say he was a bigger loss last season than Alonso is unfounded.

I think big Sami was a great influence around the team and was probably good for morale and lifting the team.  Can't really comment on what affect he would have had at training on set pieces as I don't know but on the pitch last season, he didn't really feature much.

Still reckon he'd have got more first team action this season than he probably would have thought at the end of last season. I'd take him over any of our centre backs on current form at the minute and that includes Carra. We might even look dangerous on our own set pieces for a change.

We're not missing Hyypia or Xabi IMO because they were not the only players in the team. Our team is more than good enough to play like we did last season, their just not playing that way at the moment though but that's not because of Sami or Xabi going.

Dirk kuyt has been missing all season , this is not the same player that was having a blinder week after week and scoring goals aplenty last season, this is not an imposter Rafa has signed with a Shirley Temple wig on is it.

If you asked me, I wouldn't say Dirk was a missing 'player' at all. ;)

You read my mind, these two are completely different players than they were last season.

We are not missing players, more just missing players on form. Our whole team bar a few are far below form, and if that was not the case im sure we would be a lot closer to where we want to be in the top four regardless of the injuries.

Reina is by far player of the year for me so far and, no offense to goalkeepers, but my opinion is if the best player is your keeper, then the team is having a sh*te year. And that's exactly the case up until now.

Still need a few more quality players added to the squad WITHOUT having to sell to seriously challenge for top spot though i feel, on top of players finding form.

Rafa's tactical smartness has been missing along with our players' lack of confidence and concentration, the result: 8th on Christmas time!

how many games did Sami start last season? Less than 10. Our back line and team in general were pretty much solid last season so I don't think you can say were missing Sami.

I agree that there have been games this year that we could have done with Sami being around but he wanted to play first team football and in the end, I think everybody involved thought it was the best decision if he moved on.

The form of Skrtel, Carra and Insua have so far been pretty poor this season and thats a key reason why we've struggled so far IMO.

Johnson is still settling in, although he's started pretty well.

A big miss/loss for me is Arbeloa. I think that lad was really really under rated. Think he was always going to go no matter what as soon as he heard madrid were interested, but having Arebloa as right back and pushing johnson further forward sounds very good to me. Even playing him on the left to give Insua a bit of a rest or kick up the a'ss.

But anyways, I don't think the loss of Sami has affected us much, if at all.

      I think people have just coped on that to play against Rafa formation and tactics all the goals we get against us are counter attacks and against the play.. {That is how you play against our negative slow tactics....}
