Pepe Reina In New Contract Talks
      Jan 25, 2010 09:21:23 pm
Was unsure if i should've popped this in his player thread but nevertheless....

      Rafa reveals Reina talks
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is confident of finalising a new deal for Jose Reina after further negotiations with his agent.

The Spanish goalkeeper has been a reliable performer since being brought to Anfield by Benitez in the summer of 2005.

He has arguably been Liverpool's best player this season and is now set to be offered a contract extension.

Reports claim it is a long-term deal, possibly keeping Reina at the club for another five years, and Benitez does not anticipate any problems.

"We have had a conversation with his agent and we know his idea, he knows our idea, and conversations will continue," said Benitez.

"I think it will be easy to finalise and have an agreement."

Excellent news in my opinion and i'm sure we're all in agreement on that score.

5 year deal too so thats even better.

Well in Pepe, get your signature on it and help us move onto even greater things  ;D

As much as massive new contracts mean very little... see Alonso's new contract signed after Barry-gate, I suppose this is good news.

At least he can't leave for a fiver.

Excellant news, brilliant and one of our few truly world class players, he is only 27 Van de Saar is 39. I'd be thinking he has at least another 10 years at the top and hopefully it is with us.

Since those two shitehawks won't be funding it.

Depends just how two faced those two tw*ts are.

I've raised the point before, but surely if extending a contract comes out of the transfer fund, then selling a player before the end of a contract should mean adding up what wages would have been spent on him, and putting them in the kitty? Which would mean even if the Yanks pocket all the money from our player sales this January, Dossena and Voronin's unpaid wages could cover Pepe's pay rise?

Unlikely, but then I didn't think we'd sign anyone else anyway. ;)

Just glad to have Pepe signed up for another 5 years, or to ensure a hefty sum for him if he suddenly wanted to leave. Top bloke, top keeper.

They are probably covering Maxi Rodriguez's to be honest, although granted he did take a pay cut to come play here, but could that be to fit in with Voronin and Dossena's combined wages as they were not exactly massive earners in comparisons to other players in the squad.

Make you right there mate, here is the latest article Ive read>

PEPE REINA is close to agreeing a new contract at Liverpool – as Rafael Benitez played down claims the club have been “disrespectful” in their pursuit of Sunderland’s Kenwyne Jones.

Reina has been in talks with club officials over a fresh deal to replace his current agreement, which expires at the end of the 2011-12 season.

The Spain international has proven a major success since his ÂŁ6million arrival from Villarreal in the summer of 2005.

And Benitez is confident the new deal – which could extend his Anfield commitment to 2015 – will prove “easy to finalise”.

“We have been talking with the agents of some players and we are closer,” said the Liverpool manager.

“Pepe is one of these players but we have to have another meeting before we can finalise everything.

      “I think it will be

easy to finalise and have an agreement.”

While Reina closes in on an agreement, talks over a new deal for Fabio Aurelio, who is out of contract in the summer, have stalled.

“The situation is still the same,” said Benitez. “I was talking with him and we have to talk again.
