      Do It Yourself
      May 16, 2009 07:30:28 pm
in these hard times, who has been pursuaded to get things done without getting the professionals in

      Times are hard

I recently replaced a heating element in an oven
replaced a thermal fuse in an oven
      plumbed in a bathroom
tiled the kitchen and 2 bathrooms
plumb in a sink and shower
not to mention loads of flippin flatpacks

anybody else to DIY or do you resemble the old kenny everett sketch

      Bump!

Crap at it myself, but installed a 2 metre desk in place of the old computer one so that we can have two PC's going at once. Brilliant - no more fighting with the wife for who's go it is.

Also whacked a couple of shelves above the desk to tidy stuff, and installed a couple of wallside nightlights in the boys bedroom for them.

      Not bad going!

Was putting a new element in the immersion heater a while ago but forgot to turn the power off, took the cap off the element to disconnect it from the mains and as soon as I touched it with the screwdriver there was a cracking noise a huge flash that temporelily blinded me and all the fuses blew.
I was really lucky there didn't even get a belt if I had it would have killed me stone dead it's all 13amp gear up there so it gives a powerful surge.
There was no damage done really except for the wire being welded on the terminal box with the heat,as soon as I could see again the power was turned off and the element was replaced but I then found out the element was ok it was the mains lead to the unit which had a break in it - these things are sent to try us.

      That was lucky Stuey!

I hate electricity, at least I hate having to mess around with it, very scary.

      And cheers Gareth! ;D

You do it to yourself, you do, and that's what really hurts.

It's a doddle if you turn the power off and something of a drawback to say nothing of the shock factor if you don't. :ernie:
