Liverpool are monitoring Alex McLeish’s contract talks at Birmingham closely as Rafa Benitez continues to struggle.

Reds manager Benitez, 49, penned a lucrative new deal a year ago, committing him to the club until 2014.

But Liverpool face a battle to finish in the top four of the Premier League and lost the first leg of their last 16 Europa League tie at Lille 1-0 on Thursday.

Benitez still has the support of the club’s under-fire American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

But Brum boss Big ’Eck is in their contingency plans should Benitez quit or the season end in complete disaster.

The former Scotland and Rangers chief has guided Brum to eighth on a modest budget which has impressed the Anfield hierarchy.

He is in negotiations with new owner Carson Yeung and has a buy-out clause of just £1million in his contract, which expires in 18 months.

As a proud Scotsman I am a fan of Alex McLeish because of what he has achieved everywhere he has been with little to work with. No money at Rangers but plenty of success. No talent with the National team but turned us into the best Scotland side we have had for the last 15 years. Limited talent at Birmingham and he has again made them a decent grafting side.

But manager of the biggest, most famous club in the world. Give me a break!! Even the most staunch Rangers/Scotland/Birmingham fans would laugh at that one.

The Liverpool manager should be the pinnacle of someones career who has worked and worked and worked for their entire career with success and managing pressure at the highest level.

Not Alex McLeish, not Jürgen Klinsman, not Martin O'Neil, not Guus Hiddink.

But with those 2 muppets in charge anything is possible.

Who's "eyeing" McLeish? certainly not the owners and the prospect of a multi million pay off.
This is a mischief with the idea of creating a headline not a shred of the story stands up to scrutiny.
a/ McLeish has been linked with replacing Sir Alcho which he has dismissed so the LFC job is a non starter.
b/ Benitez has made no statement indicating he wishes to leave in fact the opposite is true in that he confirms his desire to remain and finish the job he started.
c/ The thought of the owners throwing millions at LFC in the form of a pay off is ridiculous when you consider they have not parted with a cent thus far - even borrowing money to acquire the club.
d/ The rag running the story is printed in Mancland so it follows they will print heavily biased reports to sell copy not foregoing the fact they were pro manUre anyway.

As long as Rafa is here and people continue to overlook his achievements, we will be linked to every manager under the sun that has done well on a shoe string budget.

Unfortunately, they fail to realise Rafa has done so in terms of a top 4 club pushing for titles on 4 fronts since he has been here and delivered numerous cups, finals, memories and heroes.

Rafa will be there till the end of the season and depending on what posistion we end up in and if we win the europa cup and whether a new owner/invester comes in will depend on what happens with the manager.
I saw the villa 5-0 thrashing at anfield last year and i walked away thinking that i had just seen one of the best midfielders i had ever seen - xabi alonso.
I would say that this season has been down to the disaster of losing him which i think Rafa shoulders a lot of blame for.
Aquilani has been disapointing and he seems too lightweight for that position. I think he would be better behind Torres and Stevie in midfield.
Rafa has to take some blame but i would still back him and lets see where we end up and the situation with the owners sorts itself out.
As for Mcleish , give me a break.
I only worry that Rafa doesn't look too good at the minute. The season seems to have took its toll on him.

The article is pure rubbish, I mean for a start off we are broke, and it would cost 20 million to pay off rafa early.

The only possible way rafa could go early is if a club like Real were to come in and offer to buy out Rafa's contract. The point of the article is to try and upset, or destabilise Rafa in such a way that he might jump, if such an offer from Real came along.

If ever that scenario were to come along, then there is no telling who they might replace him with. If it happened anytime soon it would likely be a cheap short term option such as Kenny Dalgleish, or this other fella mentioned in the article. They would want to make it more appealing to new owners who could come in and change it without the expense of paying out a huge debt to a manager.

If people want Rafa gone, this is the standard of manager we will probably get. Someone who has shown enough to the owners to suggest he works well with no budget. Mcleish fits their bill.

Is how I feel, definitely not a sh*t manager though, done well with Brum, nobody could question that, they look to be an established prem side now for the foreseeable, which is pretty good stuff considering they were promoted this year, with Wolves and Burnley struggling away. How many times have you watched the so called experts on the TV, they all reckon that as a new manger you need at least five years to sort out a club, but ask yourselves this, was our club in such a mess when Rafa took over? if so why? and i bet you all thought that the ones who failed were the best things since sliced bread when they took over and i know that we have had some bad incidences over the years which have affected some of them, but i agree, give Rafa next season to see if he is right, but six years to sort out a club?
