Player Notes:
Goalkeeper Harry Wheeler's, who was called Fred, career for Liverpool seems unusual in that he only appeared in FA cup matches for the club - three of them to be precise. However, he was also one of an astonishingly high number of men, 38 who represented Liverpool during that 1945-46 season, although these games were played in the Football League (North) during the 'War Years' and are not usually included in official records as most clubs had numerous guest players making appearances for them during those seasons.

In the cup, "Fred" played in both legs against Chester and in the second leg against Bolton which Liverpool won 2-0. But as they had already lost the first match by five goals, it was the team from Burnden Park that progressed into the next round. Fred played 10 times in goal for the club in those 'unofficial' league matches, but the 0-5 home defeat by Manchester United on 16th February 1946 was perhaps not surprisingly his last!
