Liverpool dominated English and European football from the 1960s through the 1980s under legendary manager Bill Shankley and his successors. However, the club is marred by the fatal disasters at the Heysel and Hillsborough stadiums in 1985 and 1989, which took the lives of 39 and 96 spectators, respectively.
An unexpected European Champions title in 2004-05 cheered the Anfield faithful. Less so did the arrival of new American owners to fund a new stadium and team to keep pace in the Premiership with Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.
