Inter Milan planning to sign Liverpool FC's Glen Johnson

by Richard Buxton. Published Wed 09 Jun 2010 12:09, Last updated: 2010-06-09

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson could be in line for a summer move to European champions Inter Milan.

Reports in Italy suggest that new Inter manager Rafael Benitez is planning to raid his former club and has made the attacking full-back one of his first additions at the San Siro.

Johnson joined Liverpool last summer from Portsmouth in a deal worth a reported £17million and was a first-team regular last season despite a series of injury setbacks restricting him to only 35 appearances.

Inter are believed to be willing to meet Liverpool's valuation for the England international, who is currently preparing for Saturday's World Cup clash with the USA, of €15million and are confident that Maicon's impending sale to Real Madrid for double that figure will cover this.

Several other Anfield regulars have been linked with a reunion with Benitez at the Serie A champions including Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger and Javier Mascherano whilst Fernando Torres' future continues to remain uncertain amidst interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.

The talismanic striker made a substitute appearance in Spain's 6-0 rout over Poland in their final warm-up game before the finals in South Africa and was delighted to register his name on the score sheet in his first game since April.

He said: "I am very happy because now it is nearly two months after the surgery and I haven't noticed any problems.

"This was a very important day to me because to play in the World Cup is most important.

"The minutes I played were useful to gain rhythm and to confirm that my knee is good.

"It was perfect, and to get a goal as well, I'm very happy."

Who is this Glen Jonhson they are mentioning.  ;)

Seriously though if he goes, I won't be too fussed, was never really that fond of him anyway. Loved it when he worked his way up the pitch in an attacking mode but for me his position is primarily to defend and he never gave me much comfort when he was attempting to do it.

      That's just my opinion though.

I know Rafa bought him to the club but I don't believe he's a Rafa type defender we just needed more attacking options something he won't have to worry about as much at Inter. I think he'll more likely sign an Arbeloa type full back.

I think this is highly unlikely. I expect Glen to stay with us next season.

Funny that a defender who reportedly can't defend is being linked with a move to a team that plays in the most defensive league in the world. :f_tongueincheek:

My opinion is the last years they played with an attacking right back - Maicon and if he leaves for Madrid maybe they want to continue with this strategy.

Just what I was going to say... don't we only have the 8, so if he left we'd need to replace him with someone English.

It would be ridiculous for Rafa to come in and raid us for most of our best players because he's already got a quality side at Inter.

He should have higher profile targets now with his massive transfer budget.

If Maicon is gone then I guess Rafa wants a similar player.... Tell him to go buy Dani Alves then :P But I wouldn't sell Glen this season, he needs a chance

I reckon with a bit of defensive coaching he'd be the ultimate full back.

We know how good he is attacking, if he can sure up his defensive game he'll be bloody brilliant.

I don't think he'll leave this season anyway.

If we get the money we spent, it'd be a profit considering we only technically paid 11m for him or something.

Won't be fussed if he goes, as Aussiered said above.

Agree. For the same cost price i would say 'bye bye' and get or promote any actual solid right back.
Saying that...he will do awesomely well @ the world cup but we need the cash
