      Marquee Players
      Jun 27, 2010 06:36:47 pm
Do you think Liverpool should go down the route of signing a player that will generate far more income than he initially costs.I always disagreed with this until recently.Park Ji Sung for Man Utd has made them millions in shirt sales and put Man Utd in to the centre of the Asian market.Nakumura for Celtic did the same in Japan.

I always disagreed with buying a player for this purpose until yesterday when i watched Korea play Park Chu Young who plays for Monaco was class and he has been all tournament. He has been described as the poster boy of Korean football.

If we did sign him he would be a much better sub than N'gog. He's fast, skillful, and very passionate.

I'd not generate anymore  money for H&G that could pro-long their tenure so the answer is no, not at this time.

And there was me thinking marquee signings were supposed to be proper top-class players, I hardly call Park Chu Young that!

      And no we shouldn't.

That's a Real Madrid thing to do.  We have class and are more interested in winning than turning a profit.  Not now, not ever.

Doesn't Torres sell a load of shirts anyway? And Gerrard.

And they're half decent too, so I've heard. :f_whistle:

Nando wasn't bought to sell shirts though, saying that hasn't won us any trophies either.

The only Honda we'll see coming to the club is Hodgson's new Civic.

The next time you hear about Liverpool making a 'marquee' signing it will probably turn out to be a tent. In all seriousness I think a lot of rubbish is spoken about buying players to sell shirts. The best way to do this is to sign someone decent.
As a bit of a tangent on marquee signings I'm not sure it you remember the president of Perugia called Gaucci-he loved marquee signings-the Japanese player Nakata, he also signed Colonel Gadaffi's son who then failed a drugs test, he wanted to sign and play a woman in the first team, threatened to play a horse as he believes they are more loyal than humans and also gave one to a Serie A ref and sacked the South Korean who scored against Italy in the 2003 world cup.

Not a good idea, we can't afford any Eastern player good enough to start regularly, and surely if we bought a "marquee" player, he'd need to get a certain number of games to sell enough shirts?

Would ultimately only be good for the owners, so maybe our only summer signing will be one like this?

The term 'marquee player' is being misused here. Messi is a marquee signing not some far east shirt seller. Anyway other than Japan most shirt sales in Asia are fakes, which is why United and Chelsea are focusing their efforts on North America.

I do wish we could afford Honda though.

Which was what I thought the term referred to.

We definitely should. Fu*k being moral anymore.
Football is a greedy game now and buying a player purely for commercial value is something we should look at if its going to generate money.
Although that money would then go into the pockets of the Yanks :(
