Who to break into first-team this season?
      Jul 25, 2010 12:25:26 pm
As the title suggests, who to break into the first-team this season?

We've got some youngsters who have been punching above their weight playing in the Reserves League. As we've seen so often last season, Rafa is overly cautious in throwing them on in the EPL, only doing so should an injury crisis develops. He'll rather play players like Babel, Degen etc instead of giving the younger ones a chance.

These players are raw gems and perhaps, diamonds in the making. We've not produced Carraghers, Gerrards, Fowlers for a long time coming. Our Academy, I believe, is in fantastic shape but the Reserves are not getting enough of a chance week in, week out playing top-level football. If they are deprieved of a chance to play on a consistent basis, deprieved of exposure in the first-team, then despite how solid their foundation is, they aren't going to make that step up to play regularly for Liverpool.

From Liverpoolfc.tv (Last season in the EPL)

      Martin Kelly - 24 minutes
      Daniel Pacheco - 58 minutes
      Nathan Eccleston - 15 minutes
      Daniel Ayala - 252 minutes
      Jack Robinson - 6 minutes
      Jay Spearing - 80 minutes
      Stephen Darby - 5 minutes

For players who've got potential, that's just not enough game time they're getting. Not one with the exception of Ayala has played more than 90 minutes. These are players who've got the potential to make a huge impact given their hunger and desire to take their chances whenever given. We've seen how Kelly emerged Man of the Match after 74 minutes in the 2-1 to Lyon in the Champions League.

I'll be looking forward to seeing more of them getting more game time under a new manager this season. We have been investing so much money into the Academy but we've yet to see it reap its rewards because they are not playing at the highest level of football. They can't be exposed. They can't learn.

I think each of the players whom I've listed on top needs to get at least a minimum of 7 games (Or 630 minutes of game time). Our strength in depth is weak, so why not throw them on in crucial moments, they've got that bit of passion some of our foreigners are lacking and might just do us the trick. For instance, I'll rather throw on Pacheco than Babel to try and win the game.

And given the new home-grown quota, we've got to be playing them more often instead of filling in the quota.

Pacheco,Ayala&Sheveley must be given the chance this term.
Any longer not being involved will only get them more frustrated&want to leave

All this talk of youth is fine, but playing them for the sake of it would be wrong.  I expect run outs in the Europa League & League Cup games, but only if they impress in these games, do they deserve more than minutes in the league.

Out of the two pre-season games so far Eccleston is the one thats caught my eye.

Looks like he's got ability, pace and confidence.

Ayala and Kelly will be more involved along with hopefully Pacheco and Darby who's doing ok out of posistion and the jury is still out on Amoo and Spearing for me.

In respect of someone who hant played 1st team before im thinking David Amoo could break through this season

An unknown quantity to the opposition his pace down the wing and ability to beat people I think he could be a surprise weapon this season

For player who have played some 1st team football but only a few minutes here and there you have to hope Pacheco and Kelly see more game time this season

I have huge hopes for Pacheco his natrual ability is unreal. And Kelly has the makings of a top defender

Pacheco, Kelly, Amoo, Ayala, Eccleston, Darby and two new signings Shelvey and Wilson definitely deserve a chance. I'd play these players in some games in PL and Europa League, and use this formation in all League Cup matches:
                       Gulasci
      Kelly     Ayala     Wilson    Darby
      Amoo    Spearing    Shelvey    Ince
              Eccleston       Pacheco

We have been saying that for Years Pacheco this year i just wish he was in the first time in the 18 man squad on a Saturday every week.
I think he is better than David N'gog he proved that last season he came on and turned the game around setting up the winner for David N'gog .

Pacheco definitely, with Kelly, Darby, Ayala fight hard for their place. I also think that both our new signing Wilson & Shelvey can do all for the team. As Shelvey said earlier this week, he targets a 20 match season.

Ayala, Kelly, Amoo, Shevley, Nemeth and Pacheco deserve to get at least few games from the bench in the PL and play some matches in the EL from the start. It's time we start bedding in our youngsters.

Pacheco, Wilson, Shelvy, Darby & Spearing.

They need a decent amount of minutes in league cup games and europa games, but they also need to impress or should go back to the reserves.

Ngog should stay in the reserves & all the rest look like headless chickens.

Pacheco, ayala, shelvey & spearing i expect to get the odd game. (Pacheco's having a stormer with the spanish u-19's just now it sounds like)

Darby & Kelly will possibly be on the bench more often than the above but actually play less. If we don't have loads of injuries that is... :f_tongueincheek:

Not sure about just sticking ngog back in the reserves as MsTorres suggested...i'd rather see him go to west brom and get a good 15/20 games.

Pacheco is a must for me, this lad had the whole KOP roaring his name when he came on.

I was so made up when he came on and set up the goal i nearly cried for the lad...

He is sheer quality and he shows it at International level and Ressies.

Pacheco, Ayala, Kelly, Darby, Shelvey, Wilson, I expect will get a good bit of game time.

I think Ince, Amoo, Ecclestone, Amoo, Dalle Valle will all get a small amount of game time.

I think Pacheco is the obvious answer. So apart from him I think, based on the first two games of the campaign, Eccleston, Amoo, Shelvey, Kelly and Ayala will most likely get a run out.

I would also like to see Ince encouraged to stay with a limited run.

      YNWA IRWT xxxxx:action-smiley-065:

I must be watching a different spearing. Has he got a twin brother who hasn't played yet or something. Honestly I have never seen such a lame duck in the middle of the park as when I saw him play at sunderland last season. I've seen him before in friendlies too and he looks out of his depth there. People comment that "oh he's young... he show's heart and passion". Well he's soon 22, and by any stretch that is not young for a footballer anymore, there has to come a time when footballers need to play to their best, and spearing hasn't and i doubt will ever do so. He might show the heart of stevie but heart alone is not why gerrard is such a great footballer. He is and has always been a very talented footballer, great touch, great feet, excellent pass and shot - the exact antithesis of spearing.
So let's not got on about spearing anymore, he won't amount to anything at the top level i'm afraid to say. We do have many great talents at our club. We all know about pacheco, he just needs games, valle looks like he's gonna be amazing, david amoo looks like a real live-wire, and we have two quality defenders in kelly and wilson which could quite easily be playing in the first team in a few years.

      I think Stephen Darby.

Simply because i think Purslow will bottle it and only sign one left back for Roy to use, thus leaving Darby to play there as back up.

I think we have a few youngsters who this term if they really want it enough can push on and break through in particular Ayala and Pacheco  i hope this time around we have a manager who will at least give them some playing time ,i don't believe in this ,oh they are too  young crap, if they are good enough they are old enough.

Don,t burn them out that is fair enough but its like going for a job and they tell you your,e not experienced enough ,but you cant get the experience without the job how do you get it if no one gives you the chance ,perhaps this time some of them might get that chance.

For those wondering if Roy will give the youngsters a chance this season, this article may give you the answer.

I found it on a site about ones to watch in England's 19's European Championship squad.

      Matthew Briggs

Given Liverpool’s defensive deficiencies of late, it is safe to assumethat the club’s new manager Roy Hodgson will carefully monitor the progress of Briggs following his rise through the ranks at his former club Fulham.

It was thanks to Hodgson that Briggs, a Fulham academy graduate, secured himself a niche in history in May 2007 by making his first team debut against Middlesbrough.

That appearance meant he became the Premier League’s youngest ever player, at 16 years and 65 days old, beating Everton striker James Vaughan’s record by 206 days.

The Wandsworth-born left-sided defender, who can operate as a centre-half or full back and spent a short spell on loan at Leyton Orient last term, has represented England at U16, 17, 19 and 20 level, and was a key member of the team that reached the final of the European Championships in 2009.

His career is set to reach a crossroads this season, which is the last of his current contract.
