How Valencia are summoning the spirit of Shankly to beat Man United in the Champions League

Spanish giants Valencia are relying on legendary Liverpool boss Bill Shankly to help them dump Manchester United out of the Champions League.

Valencia have using the late Shankly's inspiration to put up signs in their famous Mestalla stadium to try to intimidate United before their Champions League showdown.

Former Liverpool boss Shankly put up "This Is Anfield" sign above the steps on the way out to the pitch and claimed: "It's there to remind our lads who they're playing for, and to remind the opposition who they're playing against."

It is one of the most famous landmarks in English football and now Valencia have done something similar to try and overcome Liverpool's fiercest rivals.

The Spanish club have put their roll of honour on the steps leading from the dressing room to the pitch, detailing all of the trophies they have won which include two European Supercups, three UEFA Cups, a Cup Winners' Cup and six league titles.

There is also a message: "Welcome to Mestalla" and "Mestalla: win, win, win."

A member of staff at the stadium said: "It is designed to remind clubs of the success we have had here and if it helps us like it has Liverpool then it will have been worth doing."

United kick off their Champions League campaign against Rangers next week and go to the Mestalla on September 29.
