I was fortunately in my early 20's during the rise and reign of these bands and saw many of them live.
I saw PJ play just after TEN was released and they weren't as popular yet, It was 92' at a festival, It might of been Lollapalooza. But they werent even a headliner, they actually opened up. I had already heard TEN and had it in my car on that day. When they were coming on I grabbed my friend and said lets go to the stage and check it out and he really didnt care, he was waiting for another band to play and I remember telling him that he needs to see this band.
This was back when you really didnt know if Eddie Vedder was going to kill himself on stage. They were playing "Porch" and he climbed 50ft into the scaffolding going across the stage, hanging by one arm, then climbed down to the speaker riser 20 ft right above my head and stage dived, me and my buddy caught him and lifted him back into security and on the stage. When he landed he actually said "You alright?"...I dont know if I answered or not, then he said "GODDAMN" and thats when we picked him up and pushed him onto the stage. He went right into it after that and it was just f***in nuts.
I never understood when people said a concert was "Electric". Until that day. I will remember that performance for the rest of my life. My buddy, til this day, thanks me for making him go to the stage for Pearl Jam.
In the span of 24 months from the Summer of 91 to the Summer of 93, I was lucky enough too see Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Janes Addiction and Rage Against the Machine. All original lineups. When I was little my Dad used to tell me how he saw the Doors and Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones w/ Brian Jones...I couldnt relate too it. Now I know what he meant.
