Poor fish.  I hate looking back on Hillsborough's stadium.  Make me think of the 96 that died.  :(

It rained today here in Croydon between 11.30 and 12pm. Nothing unusual with that you might think but this is summer and we had a mini MONSOON!  :o
Prior to the rain the sky was a weird dusk / 8 'o'clock at night colour. In the space of half an hour at the builders merchants where I work the ground was 2" deep with water in the top yard and 2ft deep in the bottom yard! I had to get a pallet full of bagged sand to block off doorways as the water rose about 12" in no time! 45 minutes after it started the rain stopped and you guessed...
the S*n came out and blue skies!  8)

Last weekend we had the Croydon Summer Festival. Saturday was the African Caribbean Family Festival headlined by non other than Soul 2 Soul. (I was at a Sports Day)
Sunday was Croydon Mela celebrating all things Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi. In keeping with all things from the East we got the wet stuff not the dry hot stuff! :D  I was out in the middle of the field enjoying the atmosphere and although the thunder and lightning seemed to have passed us by I suddenly heard screaming. I turned to see a wall of cloud, complete with hailstones, heading straight towards me! People were fleeing under the cover of canopies and umbrellas and one of the bands playing in a small marquee became very popular, very quickly!  :D :D The rain was torrential, ridiculous and full on. It was very dark with thunder and lightning and quite unbelievable!  :o Half an hour later the S*n was out, what fun!

Gordon Brown stating the bleedin obvious

Lessons must be learned from the floods, Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said, after severe weather caused chaos across parts of England and Wales.

Considering the amount that water bills have risen in the last few years - maybe the water companies would fancy getting round to cleaning the drains which are one of the major factors resulting in flooding.

I would love it, love it if the south was completely flooded and that includes London, they will all have to get on THEIR bikes and come up north for work, homes etc, let the north west become the new capital area of the country, manc land can be the capital, Liverpool the main port

F**k the southern softies, its only a bit of water

This could go on for some while as well. Apparently we're in line with the jet stream that has an effect on how much rain can fall over land.

As an aside - I was in my local Tesco's yesterday and people up here in Liverpool were hoarding bottled water like it was going out of fashion.

The stupidity and the greed of people  in our country never ceases to amaze me.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

      Flood facts

Six inches of fast flowing water will knock you off your feet.

Four inches of water will ruin your carpet.

Two feet of water will float your car.

I would love it, love it if the south was completely flooded and that includes London,
If you are able to, explain why you have such a desire for people in the South and indeed London to suffer complete flooding in a manner that would bring such devastation to thousands, (as is already the case) and have endless knock on effects to the environment and animals / livestock (who can do nothing to protect themselves in most cases)
I doubt you can. (Unless you are sick and twisted).

they will all have to get on THEIR bikes
A bike is only one step up from being a pedestrian but considered a 'luxury' to people unable to afford the running costs of a car so I take exception to this statement. I have done all 3. Walking in the wind and rain, cycling in the wind and rain, driving in the comfort of a car - in the wind and rain.
I have not had the misfortune of losing a vehicle that I have worked long and hard for - especially to a flood but...
To wish that on someone / anyone, anywhere is nothing short of sick.

and come up north for work, homes etc,
Moving anywhere for work and homes is a headache at the best of times, let alone having to deal with the devastation of an 'act of god' / natural disaster.

I speak from experience having lived and worked in different parts of the country...
I witnessed 1st hand the devastation of the North Wales floods in Rhyl, Prestatyn, Towyn and Kinmel Bay in 1990. 5 square miles of the coastline and 3,000 homes were devastated when the sea wall was breached by heavy winds and a 30ft tide. It was an incredible sight to see cars, bungalows, houses, 100s of holiday caravans and other properties like railway stations, doctors surgeries, schools, Asda and local shops etc under 3ft of water. I was working as a plumber / builder at the time and saw at close quarters the chaos caused when working in people's homes, not very nice.  Flood victims in Towyn had to wait months, even years, to return home.
To wish that on someone / anyone, anywhere is nothing short of sick.

I relocated to Oxfordshire in 2001 after spliting with a cheating ex. I left a house and car behind, things I had worked hard to achieve. That was tough but not as tough as living in a caravan for 6 months with no running water. (I had to fill canisters, carry them and boil water) I lived 400 yards from the River Thames and came home from work late one evening to find my caravan under water! All I had left - under water!
To wish that on someone / anyone, anywhere is nothing short of sick.

let the north west become the new capital area of the country,
Why not move South and take a real challenge, see if you can cope with the change of lifestyle instead of shouting from the rooftops how you dislike Southerners? I doubt you could or would.
I am from the originally from the North West, I have Scouse blood in my veins. I have grown up in Liverpool and London and N. Wales and lived in many parts of the country.
Do I detect some discontent with where you live? Why the statement?

manc land can be the capital,  ??? :( What ?  >:( ??? You really have lost the plot!
And you're a Scouser  ??? Should be ashamed of yourself.

Approx 1 million people have been affected by the worst floods in Britain for 60 years.

Electricity supplies, Fresh Drinking Water, Drainage and Communications,

Hospitals, Public transport, Supermarkets, Shops, Postal services,

Road, Rail, Bridges and even Air transport have all been severely affected.

fu*k the southern softies, "its only a bit of water"

A woman trapped in her home in the town of Tewkesbury lost twins
when she went into labor prematurely and paramedics could not reach her by land.

Thank you for your intellectual, well revised and thoughtful input and debate on this topic,
       Idiot.

Do us a favour eh? Was a touch of sarcasm, no need to jump on your moral high ground, unfortunately it is a natural disaster that could have happened at any time.

Seriously I unfortunately have a bit of a dark sense of humour, which is why I made a crack about locusts and the end of the world and as for being ashamed of myself, why should I?

I read stories about grown men physically pushing kids out of the way to purchase water, (wonder if they were in athens eh?),
and I'm supposed to feel sorry for some of these people?

As for the crack about me supposed to being a scouser, whats that got to do wiyh anything, have I got to be totally socialist and moral 24 hours a day!!

Do us a favour eh? Sorry?
Was a touch of sarcasm, The lowest form of wit.
no need to jump on your moral high ground, unfortunately it is a natural disaster that could have happened at any time.

And the point you made in your opening statement was "HA HA HA HA HA HA HA I would love it, love it if the south was completely flooded and that includes London"
That was the statement I found disturbing. Not that it was the South or London so much but that you would wish misfortune or disaster on someone knowing the devastation it causes, but I guess you don't speak from experience? I can tell you that when you are up to your bollocks in shitty water with next to nothing left in possessions it is a very dark place, especially after losing what you already once before.

Seriously I unfortunately have a bit of a dark sense of humour, which is why I made a crack about locusts and the end of the world

      - Which I didn't even mention or take exception to!

and as for being ashamed of myself, why should I? If you stick with your original statement about love it, love it or fu*k the southern softies, "its only a bit of water"
That might be good enough reason if you actually really meant what you said especially after what has happened...

I read stories about grown men physically pushing kids out of the way to purchase water, (wonder if they were in athens eh?), I would not stand for that for a second.
and I'm supposed to feel sorry for some of these people? Absolutely not!

As for the crack about me supposed to being a scouser, whats that got to do with anything, have I got to be totally socialist and moral 24 hours a day!!

Perhaps not 24 hours a day but please think about what your saying, I would not be the only person that would take exception to your views, that is why I responded in such a manner.

This flooding is something that we shouldnt wish to anyone and I think Red1028 was right to pointed that out.

Now amazingly, once again we show that we never learnt from the past.

After the Second World War, lot's of place in England were identified as NO GO area for building because of flodings risks, obviously nobody bother to checked what our fathers though and see the result now..

Lessons must be learned from the floods, Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said, what has to be learn is that the logistic was awful and the response unsufficient, for 2 days thousands of people have been without water...and in the night of the day before yesterday, it could have been 250 000 more but the station was saved because the water stopped in time, some luck for Brown. Cameron let's not even mention his attitude he is in Rwanda having a good time while the people he suppose to represent are under meters of water..

I heard some politicians claiming that we will have to keep building on floods areas because they are not enough space elsewhere:  rubbish statement, if you check you'll see that only 10% of the country area has been used for buildings.

But what drives me really mad, is that:

when the terrible Tsunami hit Asia or when Katrina hit the States, the NEXT day of each event, they were phone lines with differents associations asking for money to help the poor lads hit by these dramatics events...Where is that number now???? Only yesterday did I managed to find out that the British Red Cross was talking about setting up such a phone number to help to the poor folks over there..simply disgraceful.

Not once in the media, a number has been given to call to give money or help line for families members or advices, not even website address of associations who can help has been mentionned.

If sarcasm is the lowest form of wit red1028 then you have just condemned 99% of Merseyside humour, I honestly thought Huyton was just trying to rightly or wrongly bring a bit of humour to a very sad subject and as I say this is something that often happens especially in the Merseyside area. I for one didn't take exception to what he said even if I didn't find it particularly funny either, but to each their own and as I have never seen you get so wound up before it clearly did upset you. Take a look at his first piece again mate and you will see its nothing less than you would hear from politically driven so called alternative comedians, and you either like them or you dont.

I agree as well with Cy's opinion on the governments attitude regarding aid at the moment and future building plans on flood plains, what next will they agree to build on Salisbury plain because the army only ever fire their guns there now and again! the only reason they want to continue building on this sort of land is cost maybe thats cynical but when has money not ruled the actions of our government?

The flooding is awful :( My cousin's house in Gloucestershire has no electric or water and 1 end of their road is flooded but their house is ok (for now - ??)

Unfortunately it can't be prevented but it can be.. sorted better than it is. Better drainage, not building houses on flood plains.. especially with Climate change, there's gonna be more weather like this from now on, and building houses on flood plains is just ridiculous.
