Happy that we've brought him in. Ignoring the price, because that's what most people focus on rather than the actual player. Downing is a very good player, he's consistently created chances, scored and assisted with goals in the Premier League - with Middlesborough and Aston Villa, who aren't exactly the biggest clubs in the league (no matter what Villa fans might say). The English squad rave about his talent, not just our lot either, but the English players from both United and Chelsea have bigged-up his talent and ability in the past.
Downing gives us something we haven't got. An out-and-out winger. Someone that will stick to the line and whip crosses in all day long - sure he'll cut in side at times, but he'll put the ball into the box more often than not. We haven't got that. Suarez, Kuyt, Maxi, Stevie etc. none of these players we have on the wings will do the job that Downing does. He'll create chances all game and with Carroll in the box, it's a fantastic option for us to have.
Are there players better than Downing available for £20m (or whatever the actual price is)? Probably. Are they seriously interested in joining the club? Probably not. Looking at the clubs form over the last two seasons, you'd be forgiven for thinking the club is on the decline, especially if you are from abroad and don't really follow the Premier League. But, those that have looked into it further, the new board, the new staff, the philosophy will know the club is on the up. Some other options from overseas might not see it, but Downing does. And for me that's all that matters.
