I think fanbase and history are usually considered the most important factors personally.

I'm no fan of Scottish football but I would consider Rangers and Celtic to be big clubs.

They both have a massive fan base, win trophies domestically, compete in Europe and have won trophies and played in finals of European competition.

      well i say the same
the only reason they arent as competitive in europe is money from TV revenue and also prize money for winning the league or cups
winning the league gets you 2million and winning the scottish cup is £60,000

so they get less than the team that finishes 20th in the pl

I'd agree with this.  Rangers and Celtic have massive fanbases all over the world, have great, high capacity stadiums and do compete pretty much every year in Europe.  I do say 'compete' lightly though. ;)

Saying that though, they do play in a poor league and using other bigger European teams as a barometer, their squads are very poor as well at this moment in time.  They wouldn't attract very many high calibre players to play in the Scottish league which isn't really their fault.

The squads of both clubs are not as good as they used to be and that is because they don't have the income now to compete with the clubs in England.

You can see over the years that as revenue has decreased in Scotland the quality of both squads has got worse.

In the late 90's early 2000's they could attract the likes of Brian Laudrup, Gascoigne, Larsson, Di Canio etc.

Celtic have won the European Cup and competed in other European Finals while Rangers have won the European Cup Winners Cup and competed in other European Finals while both have won countless domestic trophies.

As I said I am no real fan of Scottish football but I do consider both clubs as big clubs.

Forest are a small club who punched way above their weight with Brian Clough as the manager. It just shows what can happen if you have a good manager in charge of your club. Virtually all their success came when he was boss and I don't think their fan base, ground or record in the last 20 years can class them as a big club.

Leeds I don't really class as a big club either.

Celtic are no bigger than Rangers. The Scottish league is a very poor standard. Here in Ireland most people who follow Celtic is largely due to the Irish connection. Do not get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with this. However Celtic are in no league compared to Liverpool or Man Utd. The latter two, Real and Barca and a handful more across Europe fit into the category of a big club.
