      Abidal faces surgery on tumour
Barcelona defender Eric Abidal will undergo surgery after the club today announced he has a liver tumour.

The Primera Division club announced the news regarding the 31-year-old French player via their official Twitter feed tonight. "A liver tumour has been detected in the player Eric Abidal and he will be treated surgically next Friday," the statement said. "Abidal will be operated on by Dr Josep Fuster Obregon. Per the express wish of the player, we call for the utmost respect for the right to privacy."

Barcelona confirmed in a short statement on their website that Abidal will be operated upon at the BarnaClinic Grup Hospital Clinic, in the city.
Abidal joined Barcelona from Lyon in 2007 and has been a regular this season in the team which leads the Primera Division and has reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. He played in both matches against Arsenal in the last 16 of the latter competition.

Capped 52 times by France, Abidal made his international debut in 2004 and has played at two FIFA World Cupsâ„¢ as well as UEFA EURO 2008.

Real Madrid's Brazilian playmaker Kaka reacted to the news tonight by writing on Twitter: "What sad news about Eric Abidal, tumor in the liver! Let's pray for him .. God bless!!" Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas wished Abidal well. "Much encouragement and a lot of strength to Eric Abidal. Bad news for football," Fabregas said.

Thoughts are with him, he's having a really good season as well. This obviously takes priority.

Someone should make up a banner for Abidal and Mikki for Thursdays match.

Very sad news. We've been linked with him a few times.

Ian Fairclough's son Tom mentioned the idea of creating a banner for Abidal and Roque for Thursday. Would be great if it happened.

      Stay strong Eric. YNWA.

Jesus, shocking news. That's 2 players in La Liga that have got very bad news lately. Hope the operation goes well for him.

Just said it there to 2 of the girls and they were saying that liver is the worst kind and that survival rates are very low. The liver is the only organ that can self-replicate and that that adds to the cells spreading. :(

      Sorry to hear that mate.

Good luck Abidal, must be horrid to get the news, but hopefully with him being at Barca they have regular medical checks and they have caught it early and he's going to get the best treatment around.

Thanks mate - that's what I was meaning, hopefully even if its malignant they've picked it up super early with their monitoring.

Shocks us all - it's the impact on the family and young fans that really upsets me. Kids shouldn't concern themselves with the mortality of a 31yr old athlete.

And just heard that UEFA have rejected requests from Lyon and Real Madrid to wear supportive shirts in tonights game or something. Very disappointing if you ask me.

I rate him very highly as a full back, and think on his day he's one of the best attacking FB around.

And to be honest with you if you attach a famous player to a skill all kids want to learn it. e.g overlapping runs and crossing I usually use Abidal as my example.

      Good news everybody

      Abidal operation a success

Barca stopper could leave hospital next week

Defender Eric Abidal has successfully undergone surgery to remove a liver tumour, Barcelona have announced.

The 31-year-old went under the knife at the BarnaClinic Grup Hospital Clinic in Barcelona on Thursday evening.

If all goes well with his recovery, the France international could be allowed to leave hospital sometime next week.

A statement on Barcelona's official website said: "During the operation, which lasted for approximately three hours, the medical team removed the tumour through laparoscopic surgery without any complications.

"Depending on his progress, the player could be allowed to leave hospital within a week.

"By the express desire of the player, the club ask for the maximum respect for his right to privacy and confidentiality."

Abidal, who arrived at Camp Nou from Lyon in 2007, has played a key role in helping Barca to the helm of the Primera Liga and the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals this season.

Capped 52 times by France, Abidal made his international debut in 2004 and has played for his country at two World Cups as well as the 2008 European Championship.

Here in Lyon we still have a very positive image of Abidal, everybody was shocked when we heard that news. I hope he'll get well soon.

About him, tonight during the match Barcelona-Getafe everybody in the Camp Nou will be shouting Abidal ! Abidal ! Abidal ! at the 22th minute. 22 in reference to his shirt number.
