      Played in the Europa League.
      Thought he did well.

Think it was away to Anji.

He did do well mate but that's what I meant about his position.  If you have a good game it's not really noticed because it's neither the last ditch block/tackle stuff ala Carra nor the barnstorming goals ala Stevie.

Very hard to shine at DM.

Which is why Mascherano was wasted at West Ham.
      Coady needs a loan.

He does mate and I hope he gets one somewhere where he's going to get games.  Another very difficult thing to judge but I'm sure that Rodolfo and Frank are onto it.

Totally agree and also with Debs, it is the position least noticed if you play well.

      U19s suffer Sporting knockout
      20th Feb 2013 - Latest News

Liverpool's U19s have been eliminated from the NextGen Series at the last 16 stage after losing 4-0 against Sporting in Portugal.

The youngsters were depleted by a number of injuries plus the decision to leave captain Conor Coady at home training with the first team.

At the weekend Marc Pelosi was added to the injury list, which already included the names of Jordan Rossiter, Brad Smith, Jakub Sokolik and Samed Yesil.

The hosts needed just 11 minutes to snatch an advantage at the Estadio Jose Alvalade - Carlos Mane the scorer.

Played through behind the Reds' defence, the striker showed composure beyond his years to lift the ball over the onrushing Ryan Fulton before nodding into an empty net.

Mane headed an extender on 23 minutes, capitalising fully on the freedom he was afforded at the near post to beat Fulton for a second time.

The Reds' first real attempt in anger arrived in the 33rd minute, when midfielder Jordan Lussey scuffed a low strike from the edge of the Sporting area which bounced away off the right post.

Jordon Ibe fired narrowly wide as the hour mark approached, but the tie was over in the 64th minute. A corner into the Liverpool area fell perfectly for defender Joao Palhinha, who smashed into the roof of the net.

Krisztian Adorjan brought a strong save out of Sporting goalkeeper Mickael Meira with a powerful drive from 20 yards as the game wore on but there was to be no consolation for the young Reds.

Indeed, the home side grabbed a fourth in the closing minutes - Wilson Janco blasting into the bottom corner from long range.

Reds team: Fulton, Baio, Sama, Jones, McLaughlin, Lussey (Kent), Roddan, Morgan, Adorjan (Peterson), Dunn (Trickett-Smith), Ibe (Sinclair).

      Yesil
      Smith
      Pelosi
      Sokolik

      All out just before this.
Big injury blows at a key stage.

Maybe they have been exposed to too many games this season.

Well, it was a decent run. We knew going into this one that it was going to be a very very difficult match to begin with. Then, we have big losses in Yesil, Coady, Pelosi, etc. which just compounded it and made the game that much more difficult.

Anyone know if we're in this next season? I just read Ajax's 1st under 19 team will be playing in the UEFA Youth League, which we aren't in? Ajax are sending their 2nd under 19 team to the nextgen instead. Considering all the teams that are in that UEFA Youth League, it devaluates nextgen quite a bit.

A bit ridiculous if Ajax can send a team to each competition really. Seems like the Youth League is for all the current CL teams so the Next Gen should just be the non-CL teams right?

Yeah, I don't like how they qualify for this Youth League. Some clubs have excellent youth teams but their first teams can't really compete on an European level, so they'll never qualify for the Youth League either. It should be completely seperate from first team results.

      Agree with that.

It's just FIFA undermining a successful youth competition they are not in control of for fear of somebody other than themselves making money out of running competitions.

      The NextGen was perfect.
A youth competition for teams interested in developing their youth at another level.

By lumping it in with the first team, FIFA have just created another load of elitist nonsense at a level where there is no need for it.

Next Gen has been "suspended" this season due to lack of sponsorship. It's primed for UEFA to stick their fat fingers in now. It won't be back in the current format, that's pretty much guaranteed.

A sad day for youth football.
The death of an organically grown competition with clubs that wanted to be there.

      F**k Modern Football.
      F**k UEFA.

Absolutely ridiculous that this has been cancelled due to lack of sponsorship.  Surely to Fowler the Clubs involved could get a bit extra off all their own sponsors to keep it going.

It wouldn't surprise me if UEFA haven't stuck their oar in and put a stop to it.
