Had the balls to take a pen. Struck it excellently under pressure, great save.

He's had a very good tournament so far I think, has a big role in a team that all naturally want to bomb forward.
He needs to keep the ball on the ground. Hoping he learnt that, he did comment himself he made it too easy for the keeper.

It was a good pen and a good save from the keeper.

      Penalties are lotteries.

I'd like to avoid jumping to conclusions, but was this written to coincide with Hendo's missed penalty vs Colombia?

I haven't watched a replay, but I felt it was pretty well hit in the bottom corner and well saved by the keeper. Was it not hit hard enough? Or did he reveal the placement with his eyes or movement or something? I don't know, I didn't feel particularly critical of him from my only viewing of it.

I tell you what though, all I said to myself before the match started was for this game not to go to penalties. That's it. Then that late goal was conceded, and Hendo's shot was saved, and I was like Mexico lose every year in the round of 16, and England's thing is losing penalty shootouts, and receiving stupid red cards.

New vibe. Easiest path left to the final in probably WC history. England fans starting to believe again after promising themselves not to haha.

It was a fairly crap penalty in that he telegraphed exactly where he was putting it and then placed it at a very saveable height, the kind of penalties that the England team used to specialise in. I am very relieved that it didn't cost the England team but I would not have him taking any more penalties until he learns how to take them properly, which is either cute chip down the middle or firmly hit into the top corners.

Glad england won otherwise hendo would no doubt be getting crucified by the press plus his critics amongst our fans.

Wasnt that bad a penalty but maybe lacked disguise due to slightly odd technique hendo likes to strike the ball. He really likes to curve round the ball, hence his passes and even most of his shots have a big right to left curve ( also tend to lift). He makes it work for him, he's a good passer, but its probably not the best for pens.

Anyway he had the balls to take it and it was basically a good save rather than a sh*t pen.

      Not quite

Only issue was his body shape.. he made it clear which side it was going by the way his body was open.
It wasn't badly hit or that far from the corner it was just that he made the keepers mind up to go left and get as far across as possible
It was a good save for me not a poor penalty

Anyway personally I'm just pleased England won because I couldn't have taken it being a Liverpool fall guy in the press and with other knuckle head fans

      He was my concern

A penalty either needs to be chipped down the middle, blasted hard to the left or right bottom corner or struck firmly into the top corners. Everything else is a big risk and is saveable, especially when you telegraph the shot like Jordan did so I'm sorry but it was a fairly crap penalty form Jordan, but why was he taking one, instead of Vardy?

Vardy pulled a groin and was taken out on that basis. He misses match on Saturday

OK fair enough, I'd be starting Rashford rather than Sterling against Sweden though, Sterling has reverted to his can't dribble and can't hit a barn door level again, its really weird after the season he had at Citeh but he should not be starting.

No a penalty just needs to be where the keeper isn't

They mainly come down to body shape and that's how keepers try to read them

It was poor in terms of he made the keepers mind up which way he was going with his run up. But he struck it well and the keeper still had to make a very good save with a strong arm.

      Vardy?

Don't know but what Keith said I suppose

Of course if you fool the GK you can just roll the ball in anywhere but to increase your chances of scoring its either a blast into bottom corners or placed into top corners, the evidence was there yesterday, go back and review the penalties. Every single one in the top corner was a goal, every single one blasted low into the corner was a goal, the only ones saved were a miss and shots at middle height.

I dont want to hear a word against Jordy... he was clearly concussed after Rudy Youngblood near knocked his teeth out. ..be funny if Jordy got a WC winners medal before he won anything with 'Pool.

Jordy is a terrible name for Hendo.

Aye. I was surprised he was taking a pen as it’s not his strongest feature but fair play for stepping up while other more accomplished pen takers didn’t.

Poor penalty, struck well if that makes sense. Made it a relatively easy save. Don’t need him to take another if that’s his style.
      As for overall performance.
Credit where credits due. I’m not a fan of Hendo, work rate is no substitute for quality.
He has however been having a decent tournament. His contribution has benefitted the team in the first two group games.
Tuesday he went missing for long periods and basically got the runaround. Didn’t/couldn’t inflict any sort of authority on the mid field for any noticeable period of time.
Occasional flashes of presence is not good enough when the better sides are competing.
      Needs to improve on Sat.
Also agree that Dier was even worse in the role. That enabled Columbia to get a foothold.
Maybe it’s because his pressing game is only effective if everyone does it. Going alone makes you look like you are charging around like a headless chicken.
Perhaps it’s a coaching issue, but needs sorting out.

Superb for England today. He's had his critics, myself included, but he's been integral for England this World Cup.

A lot of good performances today, but Henderson is probably in the upper half of even that.
It is possible he is showing signs of peaking now, so he may be in for a great season.
If he is peaking, in a few years he will start a decline. People often said he could not change into a centre back later in career.
I disagree, I think he can play centre back one day.

I’m actually a little surprised he hasn’t picked up an injury. Often when he gets some good momentum going he picks up a Knock and gets set back. Hopefully he can carry this on into next season.
Biggest thing for him though, more than anything IMO, is that he obviously hasn’t let his penalty miss get to him, despite it still being a win, a penalty miss on the biggest stage of all could really hit a players confidence.

nope. Southgate is confident Henderson will be fit. Sky Sports said he's a doubt without any source than it not being 100%. Twitter Chinese whispered that into an injury.

Article also said below which is totally false. He was on the bench against Sweden.

"Jamie Vardy is another injury concern for England boss Gareth Southgate - he was unavailable for Saturday's 2-0 win after sustaining a groin strain in extra-time against Colombia last Tuesday"

Sky Sports information reporting is not much better than that banned rag.

To be fair, he has been looking to get the bill moving forward a lot quicker than usual. Hope this is the start of things to come for us.
Has been instrumental in England’s progress with his usual non stop mobility. The added positivity is a big improvement to his game.
Would be missed in the side now they have a bit of momentum.
Also, every game Dier has been introduced, we’ve immediately been under the cosh. Hendo needs to be fit for the semi.
