      Johnson signs Reds extension
      Jul 06, 2011 04:12:47 pm
Glen Johnson has today put pen to paper on an extension to his Liverpool contract.

The England international, who has made 70 appearances for the Reds, committed his future to the club by signing the deal at Melwood.

Liverpool FC Director of Football Damien Comolli said: "We are absolutely delighted. We were in talks for a few weeks, but it was easy to find an agreement because he wanted to stay and we wanted him to stay.

"We are very pleased he wants to commit long term, and I think he was pleased we went to him and asked him to commit long term.

"His best years are to come. Very often defenders peak between 26 and 31, so he is just entering into those years where a maturity comes in and his knowledge of the game gets better and better. We are happy his long-term future is at Liverpool."

Johnson joined Liverpool two years ago from Portsmouth and marked his Anfield debut with a spectacular goal in a 4-0 victory over Stoke City in August 2009.

The 26-year-old tallied 35 appearances overall during his first season with the Reds - a figure he matched last term as he showcased his versatility by operating on both the right and left side of defence under Kenny Dalglish.

Comolli added: "It's obvious when you watch him play his technical ability is second to none. Physically he is absolutely fantastic as well and his fitness level is great.

"Towards the end of last season he showed how versatile he is by playing at left-back or right-back - mostly at left-back - and was outstanding.

"For us he is a great asset to have around. As we've always said, we don't want to sell our best players or sell our assets and as long as the players are happy to be here, we're happy to commit to them."

Good stuff. Really was impressed with him for the first time when Kenny came in and switched him to the left for a time.

Good stuff, versatile defender, dangerous going forward, plenty of room in the team for lads like that.

No mention of if he has had a pay rise, out of interest?

Absolutely fantastic news for both Glen and the club. Just 6 months ago I think we might of got rid if a bid of over £10m came in for him.

Today has proved that all the ITK rubbish isn't possible. We can't 2nd guess Kenny. No one expected this today for Glen and Charlie. Media and fans should stop trying to say they know what's happening and enjoy the fact we're attracting players and our top players wanting to stay.

1st time in about 4/5 years we are actually have a stress free summer.

I don't think he wanted to be at Anfield under Woy,so it is all credit to Kenny for getting him back in the right frame of mind.

Still a few questions asked of his defending at times for me although deputised at left-back very well last season so fair play to the lad. Love see'ing him bomb forward though. Very versatile and has plenty left in the locker. Well in Glen mate!

I really like this lad. I was happy when Rafa bought him and I'm happy now that he's signed a new contract. So far he's been occasionally brilliant, usually pretty good and sometimes f***ing terrible. My guess is he's about to step it up and become the beast of a player you can see is in him. If he ever gets to the bottom of his talent, he could IMHO be potentially one of the best and most destructive right-backs in world football (big statement I know).

its a big statement mick but he has everything he would need to be just that.. technically he has the lot, its between the ears at times he gets caught out.. since kenny and steve have been here they seem to have got in his head and got him doing the simple things well.. add that to his all round talent and id agree he could be up there as one of the best..

The added competition from flanno and kelly will keep him on his toes as well

It speaks volumes for England saying that this lad is the country's best right back and half of you lot are talking about dropping him for one of your youngsters.

Speaks even more volumes the fact that most of our youngsters would make your first team and probably lift your club off of the mid-table it has been sitting at for decades.

I rate Johnson very highly going forward and playing as a right winger he is most effective as his delivery into the box is most of the time second to none. This will be ideal with having big Carroll in the box. Downing crossing from the left and Johnson crossing from the right. However, with the competition in midfield it is unlikely he will get played there and I'm sure Kenny will have his plans for him a right back. Therefore he will need to improve his defending because Martin Kelly for me still is a better defender and I feel more confident when he is at the back. I hope Glen proves me wrong mind. Also with Flanagan, Coady, and Robinson in competition for places will be a headache for the King which is great. Been ages since we have had a variety of quality young full backs aswell as experience in Johnson and Kelly.

Glen is a bit weak defensively. He hardly fill you with confidence is a half decent winger ran at him. Anyway, sod it England bore the sh|t out of me any. Not sure about you lot but I put club before country every time.
