He was voted defender of the tournament in the Copa America I think.

He was certainly very impressive, and for anything around 10M I'd say that is a snip from the 3/4 games I've seen him in.

He won the Young Player of the Tournament Award.

I've never seen him play, but going by the comments on here, it sounds like his the real deal.

Now that Soto's left, I can definitely see us signing a C/B.

Wow, you guys are really horny about this guy. One whould think we're looking at a young Beckenbauer. I have never seen him play, but if it's true what are you saying he would be a great buy. Certainly cheaper than Cahill or Shawcross.

      Sebastian Coates - Libertadores 2009

I like these videos that show every touch a player makes in a game, get a better view.  Looks very very good, but it is only a 6 min youtube video, so I'm not going to get carried away.

Looks like a big lad with good feet from the vid clips. He deffo fits the profile we need at the back. imagine us at corners with Big Andy Carroll and this lad attacking the ball! Frightening.

Maybe then we can sign Cahill on a pre contract in January and have Coates and Cahill for the start of next season :)

Who are you and what have you done with Corbally?

Just kidding man, great calibre of young player.
Hopefully this is one defender we can actually sign rather than just be linked with.

      Coates set to decide future
Chase for Uruguay starlet to be decided this week

      By Graeme Bailey
      Last Updated: August 23, 2011 8:56am

Uruguay starlet Sebastian Coates expects his future to be decided this week.

The highly-rated central defender is being tracked by a host of clubs across Europe, with Juventus, Lazio, Porto and Benfica all mentioned.

But the Premier League has seemingly been the most likely destination. Manchester City were first to be linked, but now Liverpool are said to be keen on securing the 20-year-old's signature.

"This week I will talk about offers and decide whether to go or stay here," he told Ovacion.

Coates's father and agent Peter is currently understood to be in Europe discussing his son's future.

Nacional defender Sebastian Coates has refused to rule out a move to the Premier League, amid reports that Liverpool are interested in signing him.

Liverpool want Sebastian Coates - reportTop Italian teams want Coates - agent

The Reds are thought to be viewing the youngster as a potential replacement for Sotirios Kyrgiakos, who joined Wolfsburg on a two-year deal on Monday.

The 20-year-old has also been linked with several clubs across Europe, with Manchester City, Juventus, Lazio, Benfica and Porto believed to be interested in signing the Uruguayan starlet.

Coates told Ovacion: "There are a lot of teams interested in me but I would surely not go on loan.

"What I need is continuity so I don't lose my place in the national team.

"The Premier League? Do not discard any hypothesis. But the president [Robert Harrison] knows what my family and I want. The market is open until August 31 and I won't stop waiting.

"Certain leagues have already commenced and to go and play at a club that has already started could be a disadvantage."

Coates' impressive displays at Nacional led him to make his debut for Uruguay in the 2011 Copa America, which his side won.

By the way, before the Aryan Nation become too excited about LFC signing another South American ... Sebastian Coates has German, Scottish and Spanish origin ... Therefore, he is an acceptable option, even though the Spanish part is a little bit tricky ...

No, he doesn't ... He qualifies for a Spanish passport through his mother, but he doesn't actually has one ...

Twitter actually doesn't say anything ... The report is from Edward Piñon, a journalist for the "El Pais" newspaper ...
