Craig Bellamy leaves Wales camp to undergo Liverpool medical

      • Welsh FA grants striker permission to travel to Merseyside
      • Manchester City expected to let him leave on free transfer

      Andy Hunter
      Wednesday 31 August 2011

Craig Bellamy's proposed transfer to Liverpool has moved closer after the Welsh FA granted him permission to leave their international training camp to undergo a medical on Merseyside.

As revealed last week, Kenny Dalglish wants the 32-year-old striker to provide experienced support at Liverpool, providing Manchester City allow him to leave on a free transfer. Bellamy, who played for Liverpool for one season under Rafael Benítez in 2006-07, still has two years remaining on a £95,000-a-week contract at City and his refusal to accept reduced terms elsewhere deterred several Premier League clubs this summer, plus Celtic, another of his former employers.

City, however, are now prepared to let the striker go on a free transfer and with Liverpool willing to offer similar personal terms, Bellamy is expected to become Dalglish's seventh signing of the summer providing he passes a medical.

Queens Park Rangers and Stoke City have also been linked with the forward, who has been training with Gary Speed's Wales squad ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifiers with Montenegro and England, but Liverpool has always been Bellamy's preferred destination.

Signing more senior players is not a problem, signing 30/31 yr old players on 4 year deals is the problem!

Yep, thats it. 1-year deal for a 32-year old Bellers is great business for me. Minimum risk involved, but huge reward if we get the best out of him.

I'm pretty happy about this one.

I would rather get a younger striker on loan. Many strikers would want to come to Liverpool. We should have pick of many, why choose a 32 year old.

Why are you so negative? What the F**k does age have to do with it when your talking short term/loans? Either way they wont be here in 2 years time.

Honestly, reading about signing Bellamy did rise an eyebrow on my side. Not quite sure how are we going to use him, and is he going to be motivated to play.

I'd get that seen to Dancho. I'm no doctor but I think they're supposed to be on your face; just above the eye.  :o

Can't say I am thrilled, but he is better than N'gog (damned with faint praise? ). £95k a week for a 32year old on a one year contract?  Never been a genuinely prolific goalscorer, never been great off the bench, hope this one doesn't bite us in the ass.

Still, he is better than N'gog

We have our own young strikers coming through. Bellamy will act as a bridge as they further their progression. He can play just as well as he could 4 or 5 years ago, just not the same number of games. As a sub / cover for injuries, he's an excellent option. Signing a younger player on loan would be much more of a risk.

don't think we could get a better squad player, i'm sure he knows he's not gonna start every week because its a free short term contract, and i'm sure he's more than willing to give his all when called upon by kenny. he was very good at city where the fans loved him, and made a big impact at cardiff. good stuff :)
